Over the weekend, Republicans in the Michigan Statehouse passed a “license to discriminate” bill that would give just about anyone the right to refuse service to LGBT people if it conflicted with their religious beliefs.
The broadly written Religious Freedom Restoration Act would allow, for example, an EMT to refuse emergency treatment to a gay person or a pharmacist to refuse to refill HIV medication, because God decreed gays and lesbians should be put to death.
The measure is similar to one in Arizona that even right-wing governor Jan Brewer thought went too far and vetoed.
As The New Civil Rights Movement points out, the act is so broad it would let a Catholic high school refuse to hire a Muslim janitor, and a DMV clerk deny a new driver’s license to someone who is divorced.

Michigan Speaker Bolger fasttracked the bill, which passed 59-50 along party lines. “I support individual liberty and I support religious freedom,” Bolger said. “I have been horrified as some have claimed that a person’s faith should only be practiced while hiding in their home or in their church.”
If it passes in the Michigan Senate and is signed by Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act will become law.
“The idea that we need to ‘restore’ religious freedom — rights that are already enshrined in the U.S. Constitution — is a farce created by conservative lawmakers for the sole purpose of appeasing their far-right donors and the religious right,” said Lonnie Scott of Progress Michigan.
In a supreme bit of irony, the Michigan House over the weekend to pass a non-discrimination bill that protects the LGBT community.
“No one from the LGBT community has ever had fire hoses turned on them by the police department, they have never had to drink out of an LGBT water fountain,” pastor Stacy Swimp told the House committee that considered the measure. “There is no record of LGBT — homosexuals, lesbians—being forced to sit at the back of the bus in an LGBT section.” Is this really happening?

It is unbelievable that anyone would even think of such a bill, but to have a majority vote for it is even worse. Do they even know what they are doing?
How close to Canada is Michigan? I know, it's right across the border on the map - but, but, but surely we are different. Surely we don't allow hate to corrupt us to that extent.

*pssst!* Seeler!

I think they're even Christians!

Must not be real ones, though.

No, we don't. In fact, the province closest to Michigan is Ontario which has a married lesbian as Premier. Apparently, though, she might be wise not to visit her Michigan counterpart unless she is absolutely certain that she won't need medical assistance while there.

I was texted by friends who have decided to get married before Christmas. They have lived together for a number of years, and were unable to marry due to them both being female. I can't believe that stupid laws like this keep getting thrown down as roadblocks.

Sounds quite a bit about what the Wild Rose party had suggested before the last election.

Careful, now. At least they aren't atheists.

Christians are supposed to be compassionate. Therefore not being compassionate is stupid. It does nothing to further the Kingdom of God. All persons are worthy of respect as image bearers of the King.

snopes dot com has something to say aboot the bill

oh, and congratulations on Estonia on becoming part of the humanistic fellowship that is taking the globe by storm despite all the hateful propaganda & money tossed at it by such luminaries as that christian group, the world congress of families, who promotes the murder of homosexuals and joining forces with the cynical fascism of putin...the law will come into effect January 1, 2016

They may call themselves Christian but they are not following the Way that Jesus walked, they are not obeying the commandments Jesus taught as most basic, and they are not acting Christlike.

I think that they are Republicans.

Exactly. Not Christians. Must be some sort of fringe group and not representative of a widely-held Christian position in the States

And, of course, Republicans pander to these small fringe groups.

of course, they are Christians. Just as doctors that do malpractice are still doctors, or have shitty bedside manners.

We don't agree with their understanding or protectionism. Doesn't mean that they aren't followers of Christ in their own mind.

How is you defining "Christian" to exclude their version of the faith any different from them defining "Christian" to exclude your version of the faith? In the end, if they believe in God as revealed in Christ and use the Christian scriptures to defend their actions, they are going to be "Christian" in the eyes of the world. Your challenge is not to deny their Christianity, but to make yours the public face of the religion.

Remember the story of the good samaratian who treated the wounded Jew? We are not called to be the "holy" who pass by on the other side of the road but rather the one who cares for our neighbour. (irregardless of their beliefs, or nationality-and I would say sexual orientation or gender)
