Our local symphony has a book sale - HUGE!! They have a big space in a local mall - massive job to sort everything but I hear it's a great place to shop. My friend used to get her whole year's cottage reading there - put her back pack on & just kept loading in interesting books until it was full! Hope your sale goes well Nancy.

When I was attending library school at Western, the Friends of SLIS (School of Library and Information Science, the name of the program in those days) held a booksale to raise funds for their scholarship fund or whatever. It was basically an alumni and supporters group. I remember one of my favorite used book dealers from Kitchener came down for it. Not sure what became of that group after SLIS was merged with other programs to create Western's current Faculty of Information and Media Studies.

Our local used bookstore takes books and gives you credit that you then can use towards other books. I am amazed how much credit I get when dropping off books/ paperbacks. Unless there is another price written on it, they give you credit for 1/3 of the original sales price and sell the book again for 5-8$
Also take magazines that are not older than a year. I almost never spend money there because I keep using my “ credit” card.

It was an interesting afternoon.o_O I was outside on my phone minding my own business and some winged stinging little creature stung me on the thigh (on my “good” leg). It flew away and I only caught a quick glimpse so I don’t know if it was a wasp, a bee, a hornet, etc., but my hands and mouth felt tingly within minutes (only a small bump at the site but in my experience that can grow exponentially, quickly) - kind of an all over tingly itchy feeling. It was mildly uncomfortable. Not unlike the last time I was stung, years ago (except that time the sting was on bare skin and swelling was worse. This time I was stung through leggings but it still hurt quite a bit) . I popped a Benadryl and decided to call the 811 nurse line and she said that although she can’t give direct advice, sometimes the symptoms can get worse rapidly so people go to the ER, and she asked if I wanted her to “put me through”. I said, “Uh, um, okay”, then just like that I was talking to a mobile EMT, and next thing you know they were at the door shuffling me away (advantage to being down the street from a hospital on Thurs. afternoon). I didn’t even have time to go to my closet and put on proper shoes - so out I went in pink crocs. Lol. They gave me epi in the ambulance, then I had to be monitored at the hospital for a couple of hrs. It (the epi shot) made me very shaky and anxious. That’s gone down but i’m still buzzing from the excitement - pardon the pun. I think I could’ve gone home sooner but all the doctors were called to a big trauma and there was nobody to release me. So there I sat, on a cot, taking up space because of a bee sting.

Anyway, home now. I am going to get an epipen to have with me. Stings have happened so few and far between I just never have - but over the years my reactions have been strong enough that I should just in case.

Yeah, that's considered to be an anaphylactic reaction. I've never been stung and have carried epis with me anyway on hikes and stuff since I was in my 20s as just knowing my allergies are bad in general that was a possibility.

Watch out for a rebound reaction, that's a thing and it can actually be worse than the original.

Thanks. I will. How long before that happens, if it happens?
I think usually within 24 hours but can be much faster too. Exercise can induce it, so if you're moving around a fair bit, especially with your injury just check in with yourself after.

Your 'interesting' afternoon sounds a little scary, Kimmio. I'm glad to hear you got taken care of so quickly. I was bit by a spider two days ago...in the grocery store! So far, I don't have any symptoms of anything, but it was a bit of a shock.

Hey Kimmio - glad the epi harshed your buzz :nerd: Kidding aside - hope you're feeling better today. How's that knee coming along? Will you soon be able to get back to work?

Spiders are mostly harmless around here unless the bite gets infected. The only concern with a bite in a grocery store is that we sometimes get surprise guests arriving with produce from other countries (black widows from California, wandering spiders from Latin America) that aren't quite so harmless.

Glad to hear it was dealt with promptly and that you're okay. I've only been stung once without any reaction beyond a sore thumb but I am a bit phobic about stinging insects and dread it happening again.

Black widows are also here in BC

The Eastern species is technically native to Southern Ontario but they are very rare here anymore, or so they tell us. I've certainly never seen one and the area around my cottage would be good habitat for them.

Well my Friday afternoon took a turn!

Some well meaning but misinformed person brought a little fawn into my work. They thought she was abandoned by her mom and didn’t know what to do with her. Watched the cute little thing wander around while the parks guys figured out what to do.

She has been taken back where she was found in hopes that mom still comes back. If she doesn’t, the rescue centre they contacted will pick her up. Apparently they could tell by her ears that she had been fed within the last few hours and should be good to wait for mom for a while.

Yup, I think I saw one last year, sitting on the back of my sweater, over a chair...it was black with red on its back. It didn’t look real. It was very still. I grabbed a wad of paper towel and killed it.

There are also brown recluse spiders that look harmless but can be deadly.

*sigh* I don't get it, if that misinformed how does one even know how to then transport it safely?
Why not just note the location and call?

Kinda fun you got to see her though!
