hey jae - make sure you get outside for a walk too - good for your weight loss project - and it would be a shame to miss the sunshine & fresh spring air!

Goood advice for many of us. I will try to work it into my busy schedule, along with other things. I also hope to see the movie 'Indian Horse' while it is here (I go to the movies about once a year). Somehow April this year seems as busy as December. Today: breakfast with Seelergirl and Pete at the Presbyterian church in their community and a special spring square dance in the nearby town of Woodstock this evening. Sunday: church in the morning and an Elvis gospel concert at the church in the afternoon. Monday: blood test at hospital, square dance at Oromocto. Tuesday: shopping day, book club in evening. Wednesday: dance demo at seniors' floor at hospital. Thursday: Presbytery most of day (missing my Writers' Group), regular square dance and AGM in evening, phone sister on her birthday. Friday: bowling.
Once upon a time I worked full time and looked after a family. And I had a lot more energy.
I'm looking forward to a little vacation in June.

A bit of both. I think I will prob venture off to Mastermind today - they have great staff who know kids & know their products ...

Mastermind is great. Live shopping there. We have one at a local plaza, and they always have fun and unusual items.

It's so good to shop somewhere where the employees are friendly, professional and knowledgeable people who are experts in their field. We're like that at Second Cup too.

Wow Seeler....You will deserve a bit of a break come June for sure. But a lot of what you're doing sounds like fun too. (Elvis!!!) Beautiful weather here. Almost thought about hanging laundry out, but might wait a day of two before I start doing that. Happy finally-spring-is-here everyone!

That is a crazy schedule Seeler. Busy stuff.

Sun is shining again. Was out and about and was nice walking and driving conditions.

I don't often have weeks like this. A lot of it (special dances, etc) is end of the season stuff. Summers are often slow around here [ - many people move 'out to the lake' and commute for work, or on weekends. Dance and bowling finish their regular seasons and just meet casually. Even church activities slow down.

My 'go to' gifts for kids are books. Books about something that they are interested in, exciting stories - the options are endless.

Most kids aren't really into books these days though. Better is to get them a giftcard for something like iTunes, Facebook, or the Google Play Store.

How many children do you know on a deep, personal level. I have grands who LOVE new books and reading in general. The older ones claim that books read on their tablet etc. are NOT a substitute for the pleasure of physically holding real book. The youngest one gets excited and asks for it to be read right away.

I agree Kay. I do often give books & quality games as gifts - especially at Xmas when so much other junky stuff makes its way into the hands of children.

I went off to Scholar's Choice this morning - got a cool little 'knotted quilt kit' -precut pieces of fringed fleece that gets carefully knotted together to make a blanket - I think she will have fun doing it and will enjoy using the finished product to snuggle up - when reading  Also got a squishy owl in a colour to match the blanket. I know she loves those.

I think interest in books stems largely from parenting. When books are cherished, and kids are read to every day as part of a mutually enjoyed routine, audio stories are listened to on long car trips. then kids develop a love of books that can last a lifetime. Do they see adults in their life reading books, do we talke with them about what they're reading, do we talk with each other about what books you're reading? It matters.

When kids are sat in front of screens to keep them quiet ... well ... we see what's happening there much too often these days.

Well, that's one theory Carolla. That isn't the case with my nephews and nieces though. They were simply interested in other stuff. I imagine most kids today are the same.

I agree @Carolla If kids are exposed to reading they are more likely to enjoy it. A friend of mine posted a picture of her son getting ready for a book challenge at his school right now. He's around 11 or 12.

Good birthday gift choice Carolla. I bet she'll get much pleasure from it.

All the information I have read and heard about kids and books is - the parents are teachers. Parents who enjoy reading for their own pleasure and education tend to read to the youngsters when they have them. Youngsters who read have an enhanced grasp of spelling, grammar, advanced vocabulary and - most important of all - increased general knowledge.

With all that going for it - I read to my kids and read to my grands. As the grands added years to lives it became painfully obvious which parents modelled the importance of reading.

I love to read. And reading to my kids was a constant. Yet all three are not really readers today. But when they were kids, they loved to receive books, because it meant social, snuggle time with the adults in their lives. I am happy to say that my grandson seems to like to read, so maybe it skipped a generation. I volunteered at a school Book Fair last week, and I bought a paperback book that was his reading level. He was excited about it as soon as I gave it to him! That warmed my heart. And I bought two books to give to my great nephew and great niece...They, too, were excited to receive books as gifts.

Speaking of books, we're on our way to a used book store to see if they will take some of ours. We have four boxes in the car. Another one is in the pile to donate to the church yard sale. Two more at set aside for me to take to work. That made a dent. There's still more.
