A week ago I went "cold turkey" on deep fry and soda. Feeling healthier. Looking great.

My old guy has just been put on quite a restricted diet to cope with kidney disease. First things to go were soda, mangoes (his favourite fruit, by a long, long shot), tomatoes and potatoes. Not fun.

Too much potassium in mangoes or something? I've heard of tomatoes and potatoes but mangoes is a new one to me.

Mangoes are in the high potassium list. It's a bit wyrd. Tomatoes and potatoes, no good. Peppers and eggplant, related, okay.

Yes, I would have thought that foods that 'seemed' related would have similar levels of potassium. Whole grains, nuts, seeds, particularly bran, terrible. White rice preferable to brown rice. Plain oatmeal and its bran, fine. Greens terrible, except kale, which is fine. Mangoes, mango nectar, terrible, canned peaches fine.

The sad fact is I have fallen off of this diet. Just can't beat the taste of deep fry and soda. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

Most people don't have to worry particularly about potassium levels. It's one of those things that largely self-regulates with healthy kidneys, and some of the best and healthiest foods are high in potassium. Those with advanced kidney disease might have to.

I heard that potatoes can be eaten on a low potassium diet providing you peel and slice them first and soak for six hours before cooking.

Diets must be tailored to individual health quirks ... why broad banding health services may appear efficient at killing a few people ... oddly it works!

That is true, and then you cook them in a large quantity of water. I suspect they're pretty tasteless when you're finished.

I am back at it in a disciplined way again. Still down 24 lbs from my highest weight but would like to drop 20 before my niece's wedding in June. My fitness pal and my misfit (exercise and sleep monitor) are being used once again. So tracking my food, keeping to my calorie goals and keeping to my exercise goals.
