What's your garden up to?

We had another inch of wet snow this morning. Persistent green, except in the most sheltered of areas, is a few weeks away.
And yer dang lake (Couchiching that is) is still frozen. I was so surprised to see that when I went down to the waterfront in Orillia for a walk on Tuesday.

Couch is shallow, so it freezes pretty hard. Around here, the ice is declared unsafe on March 15th, and usually clears out sometime in early April. Often at the Easter Sunrise service (at the lakeshore) there is a component that involves releasing your burdens into a rock and throwing it into the bay. Often, said throwing involves skipping along the ice, and I guess your burden-releasing is delayed until the rock falls through the opening ice.

LOL. As long as it is only your burdens falling through the opening ice, eh. It was actually a nice day, though the ice was clearly cooling things down along the water. Too bad I spent most of it in a meeting and only got out and about after 5.

WOOT - I can see a bit of paving on the road outside our house. Always exciting when the snow cover starts to melt. Still lots of snow elsewhere though.

My Eastern Ontario garden is still under snow.
But I just started my begonias last week. I have a seed tray under a heating mat, and begonias are notoriously slow!
Over the next 3 weeks, I'll be seeding petunias, alyssum, and crystal palace. I'll have them under one long grow light.
When the snow goes, I'll put up my portable greenhouse. (It goes up and takes down like a tent.) I put it up very close to my
front door, do it's easy to carry plants back and forth. Then the seeding trays go out to the greenhouse during the day, and I'll carry
them in at night. Then I'll be seeding cucumbers, pumpkins, zucchini, and 6 different kinds of tomatoes.

Hi @GO3838 - nice to see you again! Begonias! This year I got seeds for some Non-Stop Begonias which I love in my flower box on the garage. Once home, I read the back of the seed pack - 24 weeks to flowering!! So I should have started them in early January I think! I planted some anyway - at the very end of Feb & amazingly they quite quickly germinated. But they are TINY! I've potted them up now ... so we shall see! Fingers crossed.

Today I moved more little seedlings into pots - some Supra Pink Dianthus (perennial that has been doing well in my garden bed), Chantilly Snapdragons, Gypsophilia (new this year), Asarina vines, and some Scentsation Petunias. My tomatoes have all germinated, so they'll be ready for potting up in a week or so I think.

Nice to see you too, Carolla! It's been awhile since I've been here, but I'm glad to have Wondercafe2 in my life.......

Even though begonias are slow to germinate and slow to grow, they are amazingly long lasting!
I put planters out with begonias for the May long weekend, when they are just starting to flower. They flower
continuously until after Thanksgiving (and they're pretty much the only flower I still have by Thanksgiving. )
Some years, when October has been unusually mild, I'm not emptying the planters until I'm cleaning up after Hallowwen.

Our deck boxes really need a rebuild. But, yeah, Mrs. M usually puts long lasting annuals like begonias and petunias in them come May.

And howdy, stranger. How's things? :giggle:

Good, thank you! I've been focusing on my fitness, and going to the pool more and blogging less (one reason why I haven't been on WC2 for awhile.)

And these days, being an Ontario high school teacher means doing more and more! (Another reason why I haven't been on WC2.)

But I always think of you all during Holy Week, so I'll be sure to spend some time here during Holy Week.

Our first planting of peas is done and second planting is close to done. Our third planting is good. Our lettuce, both plantings are done because of the heat. I suspect the chipmunk in our yard might be getting any red ones that might have happened. Two large cucumbers so far and at least three small ones that will be ready soon. One nice small green zucchini. A few striped zucchini. The beans have so much foliage it is hard to know what stage they are at. Kale has been good for almost a month. Dahlias are abundant and many more coming. Garlic is harvested. Planted cloves from 4 bulbs and got about 8. Earlier raspberries are done. Later raspberries are producing small quantities of large berries and are still blooming. Strawberries are blooming for the third or fourth time. Current berries produce a few ripe berries most days. Several large pumpkins are close to ripe.

I have done more watering than in the last four summers combined. Glad we are on our own well and do not need to treat it.

My 'driveway farm' has had a tough summer. Mostly tomatoes & peppers. Too cold & wet to start, and now the days are mostly too hot & dry! It's a bit of a heat sink location (brick buildings on both sides, asphalt below) - which a few years ago was great, but not so much last year & this. When its too hot, tomatoes just don't set fruit. Peppers are doing pretty well, but still not as prolific as other years. Next thing we know there will frost warnings! I have some late plantings of yellow beans in a planter on the deck & they are doing well, although germination rate was poor. Early pak choy was excellent, but now done. Haven't quite put in any of my seeds this year for late harvest, but may still try some mini carrots & greens.

I haven't been up to getting down to that process for a few years ... AN's? Anis gone to weed ... ani state to avoid ...

Many runners and vine-like connections ... seedy?

Blessed rain today. Everything looks refreshed.

Ever wonder how the lady of the mist got connected to the myth of soul as an ephemeral device? Very dippy ide-Ah! Po' ethic ... poor-no-graphics as she is dark and unseen mystery ... a dream bothering us at night ... high 'a wath AH ...

Then like inflation when the water crosses a certain level all goes awash ... like Aphrodisia ... addict 've dell ... catchy!

Some say just groove 'n ... the stories are unending about how the trap was set! Then the Bao Bob ... reservoir? Cusses ... thorny issue!
