What keeps you where you are?

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

A community where we discuss, share, and have some fun together. Join today and become a part of it!

Hey now chansen - GeoFee and all the fine members of his church live in or around Steinbach - so I'm quite certain there are others in the community who do not share the views of those in your articles - although I do not doubt that those particular folks are, as my mate likes to say, 'a piece of work'.

Hi,

Steinbach is a changing community. The religious right is still dominant and this is reflected in all three levels of government. This said, wherever on the spectrum the folk may be rooted they are met as neighbours and many of them as friends. On Saturday the community will don yellow tee shirts and we will all go out to pick up litter from the streets and lanes. A chance to cooperate with persons of difference in the shared task of keeping our community healthy and happy. Hoping for a warm sunny day!

George

And some of them are scam artists who use their religious connections to swindle people. And they hate me.

I'm not saying they're all like that. Just that these two have either questionable ethics or incredibly bad math skills when it comes to advising people on the largest expense of their lives (probably both). They cost dozens and dozens of Steinbach residents $3500 USD for useless software that left them with more debt than when they started, and told them to do stupid things with their money. For which there was no refund after 3 days.

I was in contact with the Competition Bureau and feeding info to an investigator when the "company" from Utah pulled out. Utah is incredibly friendly to MLM scam companies.

Hi,

Knowing Snoopy well I suspect the collusion of church and state would not inspire a dance of joy. Guessing "Curse you Red Baron" would be more likely.

George

What "collusion"? How are the church and the state colluding in Steinbach George? Do you consider it automatically a bad thing if, as you wrote, "The religious right is still dominant and this is reflected in all three levels of government"?

I would consider a situation like that bad. I would rather there be differing views at the three levels; it makes for more balanced governing. I live in a riding that tends conservative on 2 of 3 levels (our municipal politics are VERY non-partisan), and on both levels, they've proved they can switch to Liberal occasionally if needed. Keeps people on their toes.

so, we are starting to look.

The question is amount to spend, what our home & attached property is worth, and what something we want will cost.

The other questions are what consider
a) required in a new home
b) optional in a new home
c) verbotten in a new home

So for example
mandatory -- property
optional - front porch (i so would like a front porch)
mandatory - great kitchen

Really, Yobo and I are beginning to dream. We'd like to be out of our present home sometime next autumn - after I'm finished school. Not sure where we'd next move.

We had a pretty big list like that when looking.

YES to all of these! (we're porch-sitters too! Love being out there - by porch I'm guessing you mean covered) Gas fireplace is wonderfully cozy. Exciting to think about starting to look around! Staying in the same community?

From my pragmatic OT perspective - as 'we're' not getting any younger ... I'd also suggest looking for a bungalow, or something with the option of living on the main floor only, if it's a multi-storey house - ie spacious full bathroom and a room that could be used as bedroom if needed; wide doors and hallways, kitchen that's not cramped (think wheelchair access  ); consider if there are stairs at the entry. Easy access to public transit, or walkable to grocery store, drug store etc. is helpful. Garage big enough to actually put your car in :-)

Longer list:

Front Porch
Kitchen designed for cooking & visiting
Privacy
Parking for trailer / boat
Separate workshop ideally
Main floor master bedroom
Mature trees and garden (ideally)
Natural Gas
Good state of repair
More than 1 bathroom!!!
Three bedrooms plus den/office
highspeed internet available -- this could be a challenge given our other wishes
within x minutes of our city y
Garage

What I like about our land/house is the proximity to bus, grocery, medical, downtown.
It will be hard to get our wish list, within town. It is why this house has kept us so long.
Yet, it is two story, and to convert to being able to have the above list is big money, and the area is mixed, we are already at the top of the price range for the street / area, with some homes worth significantly less. definitely mixed. I have never minded that, but, it is hard to invest more into the house knowing that.

Will respond elsewhere. Back to topic in hand.

My parents plan is to put in an elevator or lift if stairs become a challenge. The washer and dryer can be moved out of the basement as well. It might not work if a wheelchair become a necessity but stairs are often an issue before there's a need to have a home be wheelchair friendly.

Then there is blind faith ... so some people cannot see much that goes on in high places ... or don't wish to!
