What is Polyamory?

Like @revjohn, I have never had such a conversation in almost 25 years in the ministry, so I'm not as convinced as "Brother Bott" about how quickly the discussions will begin or whether it will become a big issue. However, the United Church being the United Church I have no doubt that eventually some polyamorous advocate/activist somewhere will pull out the "justice" word and demand church sanction and perhaps formal blessing for such relationships - which, of course, is United Church code for "you're not allowed to disagree with me on this." It will be interesting to see - when that happens - how much support there is and if this is a line that will or will not be crossed. I'm hoping, personally, for "will not." More than anything, I'm hoping the entire discussion can be put off until after December 1, 2028, which is my official retirement date. I might not plan to retire at exactly that moment, but after that date it would be much easier to say whatever I want to say and however I want to say it.

Probably be somebody from Don Quixote United Church.

How the heck do we not have one of those already?

Start writing that script today, don't want to blow your big moment on a poorly thought out impromptu session.

I'm not advocating for this (what the hell would I do with two men? - one is more than enough to keep an eye on), but I'm not sure that it's a huge leap from serial monogamy (which is what culture, and indeed, religion, seem to largely 'bless') to polyamory. The days of the 60 and 70 year marriage have been largely ended for a long time.

Just wondering if the script will right itself or write itself. Or both? :)

By rite of passage from hate Gods to love Gods ... diverse idealisms?

If God is in everything and everything is part of good ... should the divisively isolated and segregation AL have difficulty getting that together?

I would disagree with him on the idea that it is not about sex. He is giving an idealized version of polyamory. IME, sex is a big part of it and swinging most certainly is part of that to the extent that many polyamorous couples I have encountered swing or have swung at some point. The question is, why is that a bad thing? A lot of one-on-one relationships have sex as a huge component, too. It sounds to me like someone who is trying to make it palatable to vanilla folks rather than addressing the reality head on.

ANother possibility is that he is trying to differentiate between hook-up culture and deeper relationships, similar to what is done in discussing monogamous and serial monogamous relationships. However there is increasing evidence that for many, if not most people sex is a large part of a deeper emotional and intimate relationship. That may be in a monoamory setting or a polyamory setting.

Now, I remember that on old WC ,I got ina discussion. Blood was nearly shed.

I was told if I hadn't tried it, don't knock it. I remember, at the time, being very naive

Took on the group but nearly got ears burned. haha.I think I still have the scars.
You are fearless!

Jar opener?
Bear wrangler?
Hair comber?
Extra in case of an oopsie (fatal jar opening accident whilat combin her hair to get at some bear spray...oops...)

You mean sort of like a spare? As in tire, or backup? Well, if he was just hanging in the wings waiting for the first one to pop off, sure...I guess?

Polyamory I think is a natural state of human beings
Children can be so loving
And then we teach them what is acceptable loving and not
I remember when my Nephews were of a certain age they would regularly hug and cuddle and be very emotive with each other, apologizing when one hurt the other. And they loved dancing; I would just have to start a groove and they would dance.

I think there is a tendency to treat sex in this culture as strictly "materialist"; that is, procreative penetration.

Sex can also be thought of as an energy akin to elan vital. It can motivate, energize, even lift people out of their own heads (one of the functions of BDSM) so that they get out of their unconscious patterns.

I have written here before that reality is an erogenous zone. Walking the ground is making love to my feet. The birth pangs of univerze are still echoing billions of years later, calling...wantonly...

There have been many people in the past who have written aboot this. This power of ours (and of realitiez). No wonder organized religion has tried to control it and turned it into a tabu (elevating disgust of our bodies and natural processes even of the world). There is even some truth to "the patriarchy": women's true power can be frightening so...
