I've done my best to live an ethical life, but my belief is that God has now taken me beyond that.

Okay, so how about my first first two questions. In what way does being "Godly" take you beyond being ethical?

My belief is that my radical commitment to Christ frees me from having to define myself by the impossible requirement of having to slavishly keep some ethical code.
 
No argument here.
Does real life count online? Do we really know what people are like by the way they post online? Some people may seem nice online but in real life they may be jerks. Others may seem like jerks online but may not be in real life. You never know. I guess it could boil down on how genuine you are online. Then again maybe not.

My radical commitment to ethics frees me from having to define myself by the impossible requirements of having to slavishly keep some Christian code?

The testimony of two historical witnesses, fully agreeing that their factual presence in history stands beyond verification, inspire and encourage me. There are others beside, but I will limit myself to these two substantial influences in the tradition of our ascendant civilization, now approaching its apex.

On the God side of the conversation I appreciate the narratives Christians call the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I do not read them as a Christian. I read them as one who died to my Christian view of the world. This marks a journey of transformation in which I patiently and persistently practice putting off the old and putting on the new. The maturation of this process sees me increasingly at odds with the institutions of religion. I see them as claiming to have the key to life but not opening the door to go in or let others in.

On the not God side of the conversation I appreciate the narratives of Plato, specially the role of Socrates in the pursuit of truthfulness in the interest of the personal and the common good. I find the allegory of the cave to be helpful in a special way. The whole idea that each person is born into some distinct social structure and that our inherited social structures shape both meaning and purpose of our experience. Liberation consists in seeing life as it is and choosing what helps and refusing what hinders.

The Baptist is well aware of the abuse of power in the realm of religion and in the realm of politics. He wants to know if Jesus is the liberator expected by an exploited and oppressed people of the land. Jesus offers no doctrine, creed or intellectual assertion concerning his presence and practice. He points to his remedial intervention in the life experience of diverse persons socially excluded on the basis of enforced religious codes. Where there is compassionate intervention expressed in behalf of those most in need the word of God is manifest.

Literalists on the God side and not God side of the conversation will stumble as my thought enters theirs.

Given the do unto neighbour thingy ... under natural laws do actions get reactions except for people that are not real ... super naturally they're out of here? If you do not react to people telling you to go to 'eL will oppression cause explosions?

Best to write some silly-Ka literature ... so the brutes won't know you chastised them ... at least they can't prove it even though you may be chaste because of their suspicions. Look what the court system in Rome's Jewrusalem did to the one with the best levity ... he was sunk ...
 
Hi GUYS --I BELIEVE GordW asked what do you see?

When you read what Jesus said to John's apostles. Jesus don't tell them , He said,,

THe passage is Luke 7:18-35. Followers of John then Baptist come to Jesus with a question "Are You the one we have been waiting for?" Instead of simply answering the question (which .appears to be a yes/no question) Jesus tells them to go back to John and tell him what they have seen. Then John can make his own determination (as, theoretically, can John's followers).
Nor dose He tell you or me . He asks who do you think", I AM ? Ask Tomas , he said My Lord and , My GOD. As I too think". As The World, I believe is about to know this as well, but to late . As there knees hits the ground , and they say King of Kings Lord of Lords.
 
Interesting lack of belief George.
When people talk about what the bible says, it is a good idea to put it out there, and then compare what the bible says to the person's interpretation.

Both George and gord make very light of Jesus response to john's question. Jesus did not say he fed the poor or helped little old ladies across the street.

He said he was performing miracles that only God could do. And spoke of salvation for the poor, that can only come from God.

He also said that John was THE prophesied Elijah. Fulfilling hundreds of years old prophesy, which also then by simple deduction, declared who he was.

The reason he does not come out and say who he is, is because he would immediately be killed, so he instead is saying, you can figure it out. Anybody can figure it out. Yet people deny it.

Jesus in fact said a lot. Nothing vague about it.
