Just in case no one read this ...

Of an underground clinic whose images of suffering allowed three of the Western world’s most powerful nations
 • to bomb Syria last week.
There’s even a friendly doctor in a green coat who, when I track him down in the very same clinic,
 • cheerfully tells me that the “gas” videotape which horrified the world –
 • despite all the doubters –
 • is perfectly genuine.
War stories, however, have a habit of growing darker ...

For the same 58-year old senior Syrian doctor then adds something profoundly uncomfortable:
 • the patients, he says ...
 • were overcome not by gas but by oxygen starvation
 • in the rubbish-filled tunnels and basements in which they lived,
on a night of wind and heavy shelling that stirred up a dust storm.

Let's get away from the good guys, bad guys. (These are always vaguely defined.)Let's put this in the context of international law and what we were told we fought World War Two for.

Is Sadat a bad guy? I don't know. I do know he has massive support in Syria. His opposition has always been relatively small, but boosted by western money, weaponry, and by foreign terrorist groups.

Nor would I get all in a fuss about the importance of democracy. First, it is none of our business whether a society chooses to be democratic. Besides, our own democracy wilted a long time ago. It's not just the big money. It's our news media who committed themselves to being essentially propaganda outlets from their origins.

The US is in violation of international law by being in Syria at all. It's intervention is illegal - even if Americans are sweet and go to church every Sunday. The U.S. is not our planet's agent of God - though that, quite seriously, is the American view.

And this situation was not caused by an evil ruler. He was elected as legally as most western governments are. - and a lot MORE legally than our good friends in Saudi Arabia. Let's get off the good and evil kick. Syrians have a right to run their own country. So where does this war really come from?

In 1945, American capitalists (thought) they saw their dream come true - an American empire ruled by American capitalists. That's what the Korean War was about. It would provide a base for the American conquest of China. That's what the Vietnam war was about. That what American intrusions in latin America have been about. That's what hatred of Cuba is about. That's what Afghanistan is about. And Iraq. And Iran. And Syria.

This is why the U.S. has a 'right' to invade countries all over the world. This is why is has a right to have murdered some 20,000,000 people - mostly civilians and children - since 1945. And Canada has been a colony of the American empire since World War 2.

The US invaded Iraq, killed over two million people NOT because Hussein was evil. In fact, it had been a booster of Hussein for years, arming him for his war against Iran. The U.S. has no problem with evil rulers. Hussein's mistake was to ignore American orders. That's when he became 'evil', and had to be hanged.

Almost all of our wars for centuries have been not about good guys and bad guys but about capitalism and greed - usually on both sides.

Canada has been a gofer for U.S. capitailsts - and that's the way Canadian capitalists want it because it gets them in on the action.

If you want to see what evil looks like, check out the structure of our society and the behaviour of our political and economic elites.

So now Trudeau supports the U.S. entry into Syria? By doing so, he is supporting an illegal act under international law. Indeed, the did worse when he sent Canadian troops to Iran as trainers. To send Canadian troops into another country that didn't ask for them, even if they dressed as fairy godfathers with wands, is illegal. It is a an act of war. It is also contrary to Canadian law to do so without the request of that other country and without the consent of parliament.

But we have long ago abandoned all that we were told we were fighting for in World War Two.

We live in a society dominated by economic greed, especially the greed of the 1%. For a long time, we have happily murdered millions to feed that greed - the European empires, the American Empire. We have created societies which leave the poor to sleep in the streets, and in which the wealth share of our 1% rises steadily out of any control. We, and our capitalists, have brutalized, murdered, starved the people of Congo, Guatemala, Cuba - especially our Canadian mining companies

Purported good intentions absolve real deadly force?

Janet Reno, the nation’s first female attorney general, approved the FBI’s assault on the Davidians. Previously, she had zealously prosecuted child abuse cases in Dade County, Fla, though many of her high-profile convictions were later overturned because of gross violations of due process. Reno approved the FBI assault after being told “babies were being beaten.” It is not known who told her about the false claims of child abuse. Reno’s sterling reputation helped the government avoid any apparent culpability for the deaths of 27 children on April 19, 1993. After Reno publicly promised to take responsibility for the outcome at Waco, the subsequent Justice Department investigation was so shoddy that even the New York Times denounced the “Waco whitewash.”

It is not an atrocity if the U.S. government does it?

Shortly before the Waco showdown, US government officials signed an international Chemical Weapons Convention treaty pledging never to use nerve agents, mustard gas, and other compounds, including tear gas against enemy soldiers. But the treaty contained a loophole permitting governments to gas their own people. On April 19, 1993, the FBI pumped CS gas and methyl chloride, a potentially lethal, flammable combination, into the Davidians’ residence for six hours, disregarding explicit warnings that CS gas should not be used indoors.

Rep. Steven Schiff (R-NM) declared that “the deaths of dozens of men, women and children can be directly and indirectly attributable to the use of this gas in the way it was injected by the FBI.” Chemistry professor George Uhlig testified to Congress in 1995 that the FBI gas attack probably “suffocated the children early on” and may have converted their poorly ventilated bunker into an area “similar to one of the gas chambers used by the Nazis at Auschwitz."
Bitter lessons 25 years after Waco, Texas, siege

The U.S. openly admitted that it had no evidence at the time of the strike proving Assad’s government had launched the attack, merely that it was “confident” that an attack had taken place and that the Syrian government was capable of having conducted it. Interestingly, the strikes were launched the day before the international chemical weapons watchdog, the OPCW, was set to begin investigating the alleged site of the attacks in Douma.

As Waters noted, the actions of these Western governments seem to show that propaganda has become more important than reality, as long as that propaganda serves long-standing geopolitical goals.

What if it comes out that Donald Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid $1.6M for that Playboy Playmate's abortion on behalf of Donald Trump, and not Elliott Broidy?

I mean, it makes perfect sense. Why would Cohen get involved? His clients are Trump, Trump's organization, and Sean Hannity. End of list. Why would Trump help this guy by sending in his own personal fixer, and get risk getting caught up in this mess? And Hannity says Cohen only gave him real estate advice. But a $1.6M payout doesn't make Mr. Broidy a client? Who buys this?

What will evangelical Christians do then? What will they say?

Syria is the more important world event, by far. I understand. But could this sink Donald Trump if what Michael Avenatti has is something this big? Whether speculation or knowledge he can't (or won't) yet disclose? Is that enough to take his base out from under him? Would Donald Trump have to kill a man in broad daylight? A woman? A child? A pregnant woman? How far does Trump have to go to lose the support of evangelical Christians?

And what would this do to evangelical Christianity? What would spill over and affect all of Christianity?

I watched a couple of interviews and a clip of a townhall type interview with James Comey. He seems honest to me. Maybe I am gullible but he seemed to have integrity with regard to how he did his job - and seems like one of the most sane people in the whole saga.

I don't care about the Stormy Daniels stuff. At least part of it is a publicity stunt for her, I think, even if he did have sex with her. Her lawyer seems a little slick - maybe he's bluffing - but the media is all over it because it's a sex scandal - and meanwhile there are more important things happening. It's the least of the reasons why he shouldn't be POTUS.

Absolutely. She's a sex worker, right? Seems to me that she was doing what she was paid to do, and that he was paying her for sex. I don't get what is so scandalous about this. He's a powerful man, right? Are there any of them who think that paying for sex with a young woman is an immoral thing to do?

At least she actually did (eventually) get paid. There are still a goodly number of contractors, caterers, and others who have never been paid for services rendered to Trump or the Trump Organization.

I don't think Trump paid Stormy for sex. I think he paid Stormy to not talk about the sex. A couple of weeks ago Trump didn't know anything about it. Now he says Cohen represented him in "the Stormy Daniels deal". So he does know about it. But, he says, the money didn't come from the campaign, so it's okay. Except if Cohen wasn't repaid, that money counts as an illegal campaign contribution from Cohen to Trump, so it's worse.

The NDA has blown up, now everyone knows about it, and evangelical Christians are saying it's no big deal that their leader has sex with porn stars and playmates. While his wife is at home with a newborn.

And now, potentially, he got a playmate pregnant. And paid her to get an abortion. If that's the case, this gets even weirder.
