due 2 human nature and the profit motive: they want to make the most money so I'm guessing they won't b motivated to actually help their convicts...much like Max Security Prisons aren't made at all for any convict to have any chance of bettering themselves (thanks to Sam Harris for this notion...his ideas on lack of free will have interesting beneficial consequences in the real world according to him)
Another possible reason or influence is the American religious need to punish? that any comfort is seen as not punishing enough?

I read Brin's post. Thought it was a very good and interesting analysis of American history and American politics showing how the US Civil War started long before 1861 and still continues, with the southern or confederate mindset gaining more and more influence.a reminder of the 8 phases of the US Civil War
