"The media’s tendency to highlight that which is rare and dramatic instead of long-term trends is one of the reasons that the public has such a distorted view of the world. Most people have no idea how much life has improved in the past few decades, for example."

White Supramacists account for .02 per cent of US pop
Why is the media bothering 2 give them any platform at all?

Some of you might remember Zach Anner, the Sit Down comedian and climate change idiot who, among other things, wanted to find out aboot other religions so he visited various practitioners and even did a youtube series on it (Have a Little Faith)

Well he's still going strong
Here's one from his new series (Earth Your While) where he visits with one of the founders of the Tea Party.

This is how ya connect with people

I see he is still part of the wonderful Soulpancake people

Breitbart and Alex Jones gave the alt-right a platform to thrive. But how it mostly thrived was, and is, through the internet - and they helped elect trump. That's why the predictions were wrong.

Pretty chaotic, ennit?
The Dems should do like the GOP did but distancing them from such things as diversity centres, white privilege concept, the practice of treating people as various victim groups vying for power, looking to change title 9 so it can't be used as a weapon, affirmative action, diversity quotas (hiring people based on race etc instead of competency etc), safe spaces, instead concentrating on human beings and not so much racism and sexism and condemn the groups that violently promote it.

Who knows?
Things like affirmative action exist in the U.S. because of subconscious bias - heck, we're seeing explicit racism come out with white supremacy, so subconscious bias certainly still exists. Meaning that if a black person and a white person, equally qualified, were to apply for a position - without something like affirmative action - the white person is too often subconsciously assumed to be more competent regardless (see Atlantic's mention of study about - if you show people pictures of a black person and a white person and ask which one is a "professor", more will choose the white person.) So, that is the reason for affirmative action. A mechanism to override those biases and give more minorities a chance.

Why not just give the job to whichever candidate is the most qualified.

Why not just give the job to whichever candidate is the most qualified.

Hopefully we are closer to that now. I think things are better now. My employer has policies which support hiring the best candidate regardless of race or ability.

I suspect you are responding to a post I cannot see. This kind of comment has been made in response to affirmative action policies over the years. Some employers such as fire departments and police departments had tests with artificially high standards that excluded large groups of people. Lowering the standards slightly tested for realistic job requirements that allowed a larger pool of candidates to be fairly considered. Affirmative action policies have helped improve the diversity of the work environment. I hope that the best candidate is hired in any competition now.

It's funny when somebody thinks their form of racism makes more sense than another's.

I suspect the word racism here is strong. Maybe discrimination would be better. Discrimination in any form is not okay. As I mentioned in my last post, we have to make sure the best candidate is selected and that things like skin colour or physical ability (beyond what is actually required for the job) are not exclusionary factors.

It still happens - arbitrary requirements are sometimes added that are not really required. But it happens less (and say a person who cannot drive applies for a job that obviously doesn't require a car - they can make a good point about out how they have reliable means of transportation otherwise). And I suppose hiring based on what somebody looks like will always be a problem to contend with, and hard to prove was discrimination in many cases.

Then there's other discrimination - young adult gets a pot possession charge during college - does a short penalty by law (serves their time) yet, that charge gets in the way of their career for the rest of their life. It ends up being like a life sentence.

Since she can't see me...I think Northwind is being a snowflake. She's loaded with confirmation bias and using that to block out opinions she doesn't like and support the ones she does (am I wrong?). She's bubble wrapping herself from adversity (am I wrong?) - she's hallucinating in her own mass hysteria bubble.:eek::rolleyes:

Here's an interesting perspective on the president's recent pardon:

President Trump stood up for justice and for enforcement of our immigration laws when he courageously granted a pardon Friday to Joe Arpaio, the former sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. Despite knowing he would face criticism, the president did what was right.

Trump's pardon of ex-Sheriff Joe Arpaio was the right (and courageous) thing to do

This is the first reading I've done on this. I deliberately went to a news source I usually avoid to gain some perspective.

Joe Arpaio is a controversial character and probably has been during his entire career. He is still entitled to a fair trial.

using the word hallucinations with the meaning and context that an alt-right hypnotist guru has used them is prejudiced against people struggling with schizophrenia, bipolar with psychotic features, and those who have suffered them due to legitimate health problems. It's offensive to keep using that word seriously, in the way Scott Adams uses it.

Oh there are lots of people who don't get fair trials and don't get presidential pardons and end up on death row for things they didn't do, because they didn't get fair trials, or get sentences far harsher than what a privileged white person would get. Many of them are black. A disproportionate number of black people and Latinos are serving long sentences for relatively minor crimes.

Sheriff Joe got lucky, but with his background I disagree that it was 'just'.

Northwind's really enjoying the right wing kool-aid. Even when she tries to balance her diet. It's very disappointing, gotta go again.

The young adult can apply to have their criminal record pardoned after just 5 years. A setback? Yes, but a minor one.
