Thoughts on "A call from God"

Nancy Reeves ( from Victoria) wrote a book on this topic. Worthwhile read. She was going to call it "A mulit-faith perspective on Knowing God's Will" but while meditating one morning she saw something like a movie screen. Typed across it was "I'd Say Yes God - If I knew What You Wanted" and that became the tittle of her book.
I've read it and attended a weekend with her, and then led a book study on the book.

From the article, "Worship, praise, honor, and adoration belong to God alone, for only He is truly worthy of it. Therefore, God is rightly jealous when worship, praise, honor, or adoration is given to idols. This is precisely the jealousy the apostle Paul described in 2 Corinthians 11:2, 'I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy...'"
This is a little off topic, but I'm curious, does "the cross" represent an idol that we worship?

Jonah's calling was to be a prophet. When he tried to flee from that, he wound up in the belly of a great fish. Do you think he was at peace in there airclean? As for Adam, he seemed to have succeeded at his vocational calling - which was to be a gardener. His one mistake was a big one!
--Hi Jae --I guess you missed the idea . Many who God has called have made mistakes, or so it would seem!. GOD dose many things we don't understand till later. The storm was sent from God. The great fish was also sent from God. How long did Jonah Long did he spend in that fish's belly? Was that not what Jesus said would be His time in death, as our Sign of who He was?

It, like Orthodox icons, is a symbol that points to what is worshipped. Ideally. There are some for whom the cross, and the Bible for that matter, seems to be an object of worship.

Worshipping anything other than God is idolatry.

I would argue that there are Christians who have made idols of a particular image of God/Jesus (eg. who insist on a blond, blue-eyed Saviour against all reason to the contrary). They idolize their particular over Jesus universal.

The Bible said GOD made mankind ,in His image .They all looked the same then? Male and Female? Have you seen GOD ? What colour is His eyes? Was He black or white? Was He yellow or red? Could it be GOD is seen by those He wishes , as He wishes? Could be , just a thought.

Many years ago when I was young. Someone wrote. Who is man that God cares" so much for them? We have asked many of things on Wonder , but never as far as I know. What are we!?

I don't necessarily disagree with you airclean. I do wonder what you think that has to do with the subject currently under discussion.

In some cases Mendalla, I would say that the idolatry that's going on in the case of people like that is racism. However, I feel that most people who imagine Christ to be blond and blue-eyed are simply ignorant.

It sometimes seems to me that certain Christians worship the building they attend on Sundays. Even when they are unable to access money for anything other than building upkeep they hang onto the building.

Does anyone know why 'God" calls people to mission work in far away locations? Once I met some youngsters who were raising cash for a Mission trip to South America. Later I met some Germans who had been 'called' to do Christian Mission on a local 1st Nation . Then I met a couple who were 'called' to London, England to plant a church. Quite frankly I found all those 'callings' bizarre. I would be more likely to believe they had heard correctly if they were making some sort of worthwhile difference right where they lived. The youngsters could befriend a student who was being ostracised. The Germans could reach out to folks in their home town. The couple leaving for England could have used the money to lighten someone's burden locally.

When 'God' calls people to travel to distant locations it sounds like a sales pitch for the airlines!

There was a time when international missions made a lot of sense. People in some nations were not aware that God was active in their country. So , God sent missionaries and church-planters to those lands to encounter him there and to help the people see him at work. There is still a need for some of this work to be done. Much of it needs now to be done "in-reverse" as it were. It's western Europeans and we North Americans who to a great degree have lost sight of God amongst us. Just this summer, my new church was blessed with the presence of missionaries from Africa. Joining with us for a number of weeks, they did some great work in our community. That said, I do agree with you Kay that for the most part we should focus our missional activities in the context of our own neighborhoods.
