Sun News goes dark

Really - I'm not surprised that those on the left find the coverage fair. It's the way you all want things to be.

A good way to have balance when considering such news stories would be to have a network like Sun reporting as well. It seems the CRTC just can't let that happen.

If Sun News was there to cover it, I wonder how they would have claimed Muslims impacted the court's decision?

Oddly, the conservative Muslims they so love to denigrate were likely on Sun's side on this one. Indeed, that's the irony of the whole right-wing anti-Islam thing. Moderate to conservative Muslims (ie. not the hardcore Jihadis, but the Muslim equivalent of a traditionalist Catholic or Presbyterian) are on the same side of a lot of social issues as the non-Muslim right-wing. Anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, anti-assisted suicide, keep women in the home, and so on. The only issue that really separates them, when push comes to shove, is Israel. The non-Muslim right supports it, the Muslim right wants to push it off a cliff. Which means, of course, that as long as Harper and friends keep snuggling up with Netanyahu's crowd and making dumbass statements that completely miss the point of Islam, they are likely losing some votes they might otherwise get.

It begins with Wendy Mesley (sp?) - her glittering eyes seemingly reflecting a joy that the court has ruled as they have.

That is your imagination. I'm surprised you didn't describe her lips as "crimson from the blood of aborted fetuses she has been dining on." At any rate all you've done with your description is betray your bias. You haven't uncovered Mesley's. You sound like a happy graduate of the Ezra Levant School of truth telling.

Then comes a heart-wrenching story of a woman ecstatic that she now has the right to die.

No. Next comes the story of a woman who left Canada to find a physician who could help her. The ecstatic woman was her daughter and one of the appellants in Carter v Canada who is celebrating because the decision is one her mother wanted but was denied by the law at the time. I don't know that paying attention to the story would have changed your mind about it. At the very least it would look like you actually paid attention instead of arriving at a forgone conclusion.

Followed by an MP with a disability speaking - also in favor of the decision.

There are of course reasons why the news is edited the way in which it is. In this case - they seem to want us to hear from those in favor of the ruling first - in order to cement into our minds the right way to react.

Or, perhaps they went with those who would support the ruling first because you know, they were directly involved. And they did let those who disagreed with the ruling speak their peace. Why do that if they are editing the case for a right reaction. That actually works against standard conditioning techniques

Then they have a couple of quick clips of people voicing regret about the decision - and then back to Wendy and the reporter to persuade us that there's no fear or alarm involved in the ruling.

You forgot to mention their eyes rolling back into their heads as they praised Satan and carved pentagrams into their foreheads.

Are you now convinced the ruling actually does open a people hunting season? If not what should we be fearing?

Yes they certainly do have newsprint. I just have to open up my local rag and there it is in black and white all kinds of Sun News stuff. Then there is the Ottawa Sun no shortage of Sun News media there. BTW John do you ever do any writing in your local newspaper? I would enjoy reading some if you did.

Well actually I am a sucker for punishment so I read a lot of their material but it is always the same old anti-liberal stuff so the broken record gets tiresome after awhile. So when all is said and done the bear just can't bare it anymore.

I thought that part had been edited out! I mean, I had heard about it. There were rumours, but ... wow. It actually got on the air? Somebody at CBC slipped up big time.

My local newspaper has three ministers that write a weekly column usually pertaining to religious matters. One is a Penecostal minister the other UCCan and one from New life Community Church. For a city of only 16000 people I wonder if that is a record.

I actually do think there is a place for lots of differing views. But if viewers don't watch and advertisers don't advertise then you don't last.

In general, when ever I personally know something about a story I find the facts in error.

More viewers would have watched - and more advertisers would have advertised if Sn had been given a fair shake by the CRTC.

There's the rub. Complaints about mandatory carriage aside, Sun News failed because hardly anybody watched. As I understand it, even without mandatory carriage, they had access to about 4.1 million households in Canada - but their actual viewship was sometimes no more than a few hundred. No one cared. No one watched. Not even those with access. I had access to Sun News from the beginning. I think I turned it on twice. Literally twice. And I'm a news junkie. itvwas an entertainment channel pretending to be a news network. It was full of right wing commentary but lacking in actual news coverage. They tried to rile people up, offend people, outrage people - but even though they sometimes managed to do that, no one watched. People just complained.

As to bias in the media - here's the thing. Mainstream media is by definition mainstream. The reality is that Canadians in general tend to be centre/centre left ideologically. We have the political history and the voting patterns to show that. The current Conservative reign is an anomaly caused by a political system that allows a right wing party to govern even though it gets barely more than a third of the vote. Unlike some, I don't rage against that voting system. I simply note that it produces an unrepresentative result. But for a truly national network to survive it has to appeal to the broadest audience possible. And - Canadians tend to be centre/centre left. If you're outside that broad audience it looks like bias, but it isn't. Appealing to your audience is what you have to do if you want to be watched, and if you don't get watched you don't survive. Sun News is proof. Or, you can only survive if you have an owner with deep pockets who's determined to get his or her point across regardless of viewship and revenue losses. Again, Sun News didn't have that apparently.

Most young people I know don't watch tv. Don't have cable. Don't have home phones.

They watch what ever news feed they want their computers
