Mum and dad robin are feeding 3 largish and extremely hungry fledglings -- beaks wide open, outside my door. I tried to get a picture, but mum was giving me the stink eye so I backed off.

I don't seem to have any nests around this year, not that I have noticed yet. Then again, one year there was one right over the deck and we only found it when we saw a puddle of droppings forming on the deck. We discovered we could see the nest from our son's former bedroom and they were just about to fledge. Now that room is my office so any nests in that tree tend to get noticed.

Saskatchewan is showing off her amazing weather again. Floods are draining while fires and dust storms start up further south.

Our forecast locally says tomorrow will probably bring some more snow.. Many lakes and camping areas are still buried under ice and drifts.

The nest has been empty for several days. I spotted a robin "mini me" perched on the roof next door. If you could watch it's growth in lapsed time, it would be astonishing in it's speed. I caught a glimpse of one stripey baby running on the lawn the other day, then voila, a miniature adult.

There’s lots of wild animals around here, flourishing. On any given day I might see a deer, a hare, a squirrel, raccoons, lots of different birds, maybe all in the same day. And I’m not far from the town centre either. That’s pretty awesome. Though, the deer populations are monitored because gardeners don’t like them. The females were given birth control implants a few years ago. Haven’t seen one since last year but maybe that’ll happen.

We even have tiny little lizards around here, which I didn’t realize lived here until recently. They’re pretty cute. One happened to cross my path a year ago and I was surprised, then I noticed them more often. I don’t recall ever seeing one before last year. Someone told me that they got here because someone brought them a couple 50 years ago from a different habitat and they escaped. I don’t know if that’s true - they might be native to the area and stick to the environment in this particular part of town.

Edit: it’s not quite true - they are native to Europe and were released when a small zoo shut down in 1970. Was that smart? How does that help/ harm our ecosystem I wonder. Well, the non human animals and plant life seem to be thriving so I guess it didn’t hurt it too much.

We even have peacocks brought in by British aristocrats, that live in and around a big park (that was built over a native burial ground :( ) and don’t venture away from it much. They’re well looked after there. They are the most stunning birds. I haven’t been there to see them in several years though. They’re pretty loud for the people living nearby lol.

Whales, sea lions, seals…

Oh I read recently that there’s a great white shark somewhere in the waters off the southern BC west coast that swam up from California, I think (iirc, obvious guess). Marine biologists in Seattle are tracking its migration patterns but the radio system they use isn’t nearly as precise as gps, so they’ve had reports of it being inland lol. It could be headed to Japan by now.

Great whites are remarkable creatures. Too bad they kind of got slandered by Jaws (which is nonetheless a helluva good movie). They certainly are one of the most dangerous sharks to humans but the number of them we kill vastly outnumbers the number of us they kill. And in some respects, tiger sharks are scarier in that they will bite and eat almost anything that gets in their path. I've seen lots of dive footage where whites just cruised past a diver and others where the diver had to take physical action to dissuade a tiger.

Seems like it’s usually surfers they attack.
