And did Paul himself ever say that Godde had broken Godde's covenant with Israel?
Israel themselves broke their Covenant with God ----through Disobedience ---sin and rebellion --God doesn't break Covenants ---People do ====

The Israelites said they would keep God's Commandments and they didn't ---they broke their Covenant ----

There is no ant Semitism in the Bible ----Period ----it is human ignorance to even think that God's word put out anti semitism ---it is all in the corrupt human mind -----

Proverbs 4:7

Yes, in the
Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), it is a recurring theme that the people of Israel and Judah broke their covenant with God through disobedience, idolatry, and other sins. The covenant was an agreement where Israel would obey God's commandments and remain His chosen people, but their repeated failure to do so resulted in divine punishment, such as exile.

However, God also promised to renew the covenant through a future promise.

How Israel broke the covenant:

  • Disobedience to God's commands:The Israelites failed to uphold the commandments and laws given to them by God.
  • Idolatry:They repeatedly turned to worshiping other gods and idols, a direct betrayal of their covenant.
  • Sinful actions:Sins like adultery, stealing, and lying are cited as examples of their covenant-breaking behavior.

Consequences of the broken covenant:

  • God's punishment:God punished Israel by sending enemies to afflict them, bringing disaster, and ultimately leading to their exile.
  • Severed relationship:The covenant relationship was severed from Israel's side, as they no longer functioning according to its terms.
God's faithfulness and promise of restoration:

  • God remained faithful despite Israel's unfaithfulness, God remained faithful to His covenant promises.
  • Promise of a new covenant:The prophets also spoke of a future day when God would make a new covenant with His people.

I say ------More scriptural proof Israel broke their Covenant with God ---

Jeremiah 11 NLT - Judah’s Broken Covenant - BibleProject

In the Bible, the Lord says that Israel and Judah have broken the covenant he made with their ancestors.

Topical Bible: The Jews: Punished For: Breaking Covenant

Exile as Punishment:
The ultimate punishment for breaking the covenant was the exile of the Jewish people. In 2 Kings 17:18-20 , it is recorded.

Psalm 78:10
They failed to keep God's covenant ...
The Israelites' failure to keep God's covenant is a recurring theme throughout the Old Testament.

Acts 19:11-20
God has been performing miraculous things by Paul's hands. Even handkerchiefs or aprons that have touched his body could heal the sick.

Some iterant Jewish exorcists (the seven sons of Sceva) try to invoke the name of Jesus over evil spirits.

The evil spirit asks, "Who are you?" It knows Jesus and is acquainted with Paul.

The man possessed by the evil spirit jumps on the sons and beats them into submission. They flee from the house naked and wounded.

This becomes widely known and the name of Jesus is praised. Many believers come forward, confessing and making their deeds known.

Large numbers of those who practiced magic collect up and burn their books. The value of the books was 50,000 silver coins.

The word of the Lord continues to grow in power and to prevail.

If a new covenant supersedes an older covenant, then is not the older null and void?
No ----what is null in void is the Mosaic Laws -Jesus fulfilled the 613 laws ----but the Isrealites refused to believe in the new Covenant ---so they were still trying to keep the Laws that they couldn't keep ---and some today are still trying to keep the 613 laws which they can't keep ----

The letter of the Law brings the 2nd death ------eternal separation from God ---but God Agapes His Chosen people so much that He saves them from themselves -----and honors His Covenant with them in the end ------The 144000 ---the 12 tribes of Israel are saved and live in the New Earth -----

In today's text, we see Jesus prevailing over magic and over the seven Jewish exorcists.

The sons of Sceva try to invoke the name of Jesus but the evil spirit is onto them. Evil spirits often recognize Jesus quickly so they know something fishy is going on.

Is this an Anti-Semitic story? It seems to be telling us that Jesus and Paul supersede Judaism. Or is this not the message?

Before I comment on today's scripture ===just want to address this comment

Is this an Anti-Semitic story? It seems to be telling us that Jesus and Paul supersede Judaism. Or is this not the message?
A big Fat NO -----it is not ----if you rightly divide God's word and have Spiritual understanding of what is happening here --it is not anti Semitic -----it is anti Semitic if your reading it from a corrupt human Nature -----and have no understanding that Judaism had mystical practices

This is all to do with telling the difference between True Faith in Christ and manipulation through magical practices which were associated with Judaism ------

So this is an inhouse conflict and is not anti semitism -------get understanding --FOLKS

Paul is not superseding anything here ------he is showing the difference between true Faith in Christ and using Mystical practices -----which was in Judaism -----

Paul is NOT CONDEMNING Judaism ---it is about showing the Corrupt influence of magic ---that was a practice of Judaism --

Here your seeing Jewish individuals trying to Exploit the Power of Jesus through Magical means ------

For instance -- Kabbalah ----and Merkabah
AI
Kabbalah is a Jewish mystical tradition, originating from ancient esoteric teachings passed down through generations, that seeks to understand the hidden nature of God and the universe.

AI
Merkabah mysticism is an early form of Jewish mysticism centered on the visionary ascents to God's throne described in Ezekiel

On to today's scripture

Good point about the Jewish mystical practices @unsafe. And the story contrasts them with true faith in Christ, I agree.

The text also teaches us there is no point in calling on Jesus if we don't really mean it.

Like a parable, there is a lot to unpack here.

After the Jewish mystics are sent away humiliated, do you think they return to Jewish observance? Nothing in the story suggests they are converted to following the Way of Jesus.

Of course Christianity also has mystic practices, always has. Christian mystics have often been viewed with suspicion by the Church. Then there is the whole question of faith healings, that are sometimes (often?) portrayed as 'magical'. SO the debate is not just about any one faith.

WE do have to remember that two equally powerful (or powerless) faith traditions are in competition in these stories, it is not yet known in the era of Paul or even when Luke writes the book of Acts later which form will take the pre-eminent place (though I suspect that by the time of writing it is becoming a bit clearer after teh fall of the temple)

Paul is doing Miracles in Ephesus ---healing people and delivering them from evil Spirits ---there is even healing power in his handkerchief and apron -----Like with what happened to the lady who just touched the hem of Jesus' garment ------His Faith went out from His Cloak and healed the woman

So here we see some of the traveling Jewish exorcists also attempted to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits------But the Demons say they don't know them ----they only know Jesus and Paul -----not stupid demons here ----Folks -----

it tells us who is doing this ----
14 Seven sons of one [named] Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.

So these people were trying to do what Paul was doing -----and it backfired on them -----Big Time

Why --because they had No legal right to use the name of Jesus as they had no Personal Relationship with Him ----

And guess what --there are many people today trying to call on the name of Jesus when they have no legal right to do so ---and His ear is turned away from them ----but they are taught false doctrine and so they they are ignorant of the real truth -----

I hear it all the time --We are ALL God's Children -----well that is a Lie Folks ----we are All God's Creation ----You need Jesus in you to be called a Child of God ---and that is the Truth ---according to Scripture ---Not Me ----

So we see that the man with the evil spirit pounces on the Men ---strips them naked and they are wounded -----and they run away in terror -----

These men had no Spiritual Power over the evil spirit --so the demon had full reign over them all -----and that stand today as well ------without Jesus ---Satan has full reign to play havoc over God's creation ----and he is very active doing just that to many today ------

The News of this happening travelled all over Ephesus to both the Jews and Gentiles ----fear crept in and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified and exhalted --

There was a strong Satanic hold in Ephesus by the sounds of it ----and they got shook up and like God has to do to us sometimes -He hit this place over the head with a strong Showing -----and it worked ----

Many believers were coming confessing their sinful lives -----rebuking any connection they may of had with the demonic ----

and ----AMP ____many who had practiced magical arts collected their books and [throwing book after book on the pile] began burning them in front of everyone -----

These books by the sounds of things were expensive ---now they are burning them -----

We see that God's word was growing greatly and prevailed in Ephesus -----

I say ------WOW ---this happening made a splash in peoples lives here ----Kudos to God who worked through Paul to open many eyes -----that they saw the reality of the power demons and were ready to denounce them ----

It seems to me their eyes were unveiled and the light can upon them ----they saw the reality of the power of demons ===

This reminds me of my situation in the PMQ I lived in where I had an entity in the house and the Padre asked If I had held any seances in the house ---if played with Tarot cards --or played with or owned a Ouija board -----if I had a statute of Buddha in the house -----or others idol objects ----when I said No --he said will someone before you had occult dealings in your house -----

God says this in his word about housing detestable things ---

Deuteronomy 7:26
Amplified Bible
You shall not bring an abomination (idol) into your house, and like it come under the ban (doomed to destruction); you shall utterly detest and you shall utterly hate it, for it is something banned.

I say ----That could be a lot of things as we can made Idols of just about anything we have ------doesn't have to be just a Statute --- it can be anything we hold higher than God ---A diamond ring perhaps ---Prayer Beads perhaps ----Books as seen in today's scripture -etc ----

I know some believe that bad energy can attach itself to items -----Not To sure about that myself ----I do know we project our energy outward ---never heard of energy imprints

AI Overview

While the concept of "bad energy" is not scientifically measurable,
many people believe it can transfer to objects through intense emotions or experiences, leading to feelings of unease or negative effects from those items. This phenomenon is often viewed as an energetic imprint from people or situations. To counter or remove it, people may use practices like cleansing ceremonies or intentionally creating positive environments.
Beliefs about Energy Transfer

  • Energetic Imprints:The theory is that the strong emotions or intentions of people can create an energetic "imprint" on objects or places.
  • Psychological Impact:Even if the energy itself isn't scientifically real, exposure to consistent negativity can trigger internal negative states, such as anxiety or stress, in others.
  • Personal Experience:People report experiencing negative feelings from items, such as old clothing or antiques, that have been linked to intense or unhappy experiences.
  • "Vibrations":The concept is often discussed in terms of "energetic vibrations," where objects or people are thought to possess different energetic frequencies.
How "Negative Energy" May Be Transferred

  • People to Objects:An individual's prolonged exposure to negative emotions could "charge" an object with that energy.
  • People to People:One person's negative energy can influence another, particularly if they are in close proximity or have an emotional connection.
  • Places to People:Environments that are associated with significant emotional events, such as battle memorials, are sometimes believed to hold residual negative energy.
How to Address Negative Energy

  • Creating Boundaries:Limiting interaction with people or environments that consistently trigger negative feelings can help protect your own energy.
  • Spiritual Cleansing:Practices like smudging with sage are used to clear and cleanse objects, spaces, or even people of unwanted energies, according to Quora.
  • Positive Affirmation and Environment:Deliberately cultivating a positive mindset and surroundings can help shift negative energy into a positive one.
  • Mindfulness:Being aware of how external inputs affect your internal state and questioning your reactions can provide control over these interactions.

After the Jewish mystics are sent away humiliated, do you think they return to Jewish observance? Nothing in the story suggests they are converted to following the Way of Jesus.
I personally think they were probably saved -----first off they were believers in Jesus cause they were trying to use His name to do what Paul did ------after the incident they encountered with the demon ---they showed their repentance by burning the Books in public and by doing this they were renouncing their practice of magic and accepting Christ's Faith -----they were publicly showing their Commitment to Christ -----so I do believe they became Saved individuals -----

The Bible will not always spell everything out for us ----sometimes you need Spiritual Eyes to see the Forest behind the trees -that is my view ----

Acts 19:19
I didn't think the ones burning the books were the seven sons of Sceva.

The sons had fled. They were iterant exorcists and we don't know where they came from in the first place.

The incident of the beating became known to all who lived in Ephesus and fear came over everyone.

Many were inspired to come forward to confess & make their deeds known. A large number who had practiced magic collected and burned up those magical books.

Different group, I believe, and it sounds like more than 7 guys.

I didn't think the ones burning the books were the seven sons of Sceva.
You are right ----they ran off ----my bad -----it was many who practiced Magic that burned their books ----so what happened to these 7 sons ---we don't know ---they disappeared ---- ---

--but one thing is for sure ----they certainly found out how powerful spiritual warfare is -----

Acts 19:21-41
There is a great disturbance concerning the Way in Ephesus. It is initiated by Demetrius, a silversmith who makes silver shrines of the goddess Artemis.

He gathers together his fellow craftsmen along with similar workers from other trades. Paul is posing a threat to their businesses, he says, by declaring that gods made by human hands are not gods at all.

There is an uproar which attracts an unruly crowd. They rush to the theatre, dragging Paul's companions Gaius and Aristarchus with them. Timothy and Erastus have already left for Macedonia.

Paul wants to enter the public assembly but the disciples do not allow this. Even some of the provincial authorities advise him to stay away.

The crowd is confused and some think the disturbance is about Alexander. They keep shouting about Artemis and her greatness for two hours or so.

The city secretary quiets the crowd. "The facts of Artemis who fell from heaven are well known", he says. "Don't do anything reckless!"

"These men are neither temple robbers nor blasphemers of Artemis. If Demetrius and the craftsmen have a complaint, the courts are open."

The secretary sees they are in danger of being charged with rioting. He dismisses the assembly.

The unnamed city secretary is the sensible one today.

Unruly crowds are such a prevalent theme in the NT. And they don't always even know what they are protesting about.

There are echoes of "Crucify him! Crucify him!" in this reading.

So here we see in the first verse -----AMP B says

that Paul was determined by the Spirit to travel through Macedonia and Achaia (most of the Greek mainland), and go to Jerusalem

NET --Says
Paul resolved to go to Jerusalem,

Notice :-----No mention of the Spirit here -----but the study notes at the bottom of the ENT --clears that up -----

Acts 19:21 tn GrkPaul purposed in [his] spirit” means “to resolve” (or “decide”): Paul resolved 19:21.”

I say -------This of course is the Holy Spirit --who is sending Paul to this place ------

This is from Strong's Concordance
to purpose in the spirit), Acts 19:21; to place (or posit) for the execution of one's purpose,

I say -----Just showing here that the same message is being executed in both Translations ----even though they don't both have the word Spirit in the text ----but this departure is by the Holy Spirit ----not Paul on his own power -----

So Paul sends Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia ahead of him ----and Pauls stays in Asia for a while ===

At this time there was a great disturbance that erupted about the Way.---AMP-(Jesus, Christianity)

Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of [the goddess] Artemis (Diana) was bringing good profit to the craftsmen ----he gathered these people together and said that they make a good living from creating these Shrines and now Paul is preaching that gods made by human hands are not gods at all -----

From google about this temple =

What are some facts about the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus?

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus is considered unusual for several reasons: Size and Grandeur: The temple was one of the largest and most magnificent structures of the ancient world. It stood approximately 55 meters (180 feet) tall, with 127 marble columns, each towering about 20 meters (65 feet) high.

I say --
----So now fear has crept in to these trades people that their businesses will be discreated and they will loose business and money because of what Paul is persuading people to believe --and not only their business will suffer but this Preaching will dishonor and dethrone the goddess Artemis and make her loose her glorious magnificence that people worship ----

Poor Paul ---chaos erupts almost everywhere he goes -----Preaching Jesus and His New Covenant doesn't come easy ----and that is the same today --Folks ---

So Chaos arises over this ---and these business people start shouting ---Praising this goddess and this caused the people in the city to be confused and they all gathered in
the amphitheater, dragging along with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions. ====

Paul wanted to go into this Pagan crowd but was warned that he should not go ----the crowd was confused ---some shouting one thing --others shouting another ------so Alexander who the Jews pushed forward to speak to the Crowd to make a defence ----but when it was known he was a Jew ---the shouting started again to praise their goddess ---

I say -----Here is the thing with Idols ---they have an expiration time on them -----Jesus is forever ---He never expires -----Folks

So the city clerk comes calms the crowd ----and explains that the men they have brought here have not said anything against this temple or the goddess ----so if the businessmen have a complaint they need to take it to court and let the court deal with the situation ----as by having this chaotic crowd we run the risk of being charged with disorderly conduct ----and the crowd listens and disperses -----

This clerk was showing a rational mind set as there had been nothing done to provoke the fear that these people were fearing ---they were reacting before anything happened ------they were still making their Idols and selling them and getting their profit ---from their goddess ----

I wonder if they actually worshiped this goddess ---or they were only interested in what profit they made from duplicating her Shrine in silver -----Maybe Greed showing here ???????

Paul is Preaching God ---The Devil is preaching FEAR -----

God sent the clerk and saved Paul and his companions again ------

The city secretary does not appear to be threatened in any way by Paul or his companions. He rightly points out that they have not robbed the temple of Artemis nor blasphemed against her.

He remains firm in his conviction that Artemis (or her idol) fell from the sky. Did his faith allow his cool head to prevail?

@unsafe has suggested that this individual was sent by God. Could be, yes. Perhaps.

It could even be that God had no problem with a multi-faith Ephesus. :)

Well ---no to sure about that ---- :)

I am. Look at two adjacent countries. One is peaceable and does a pretty good job looking after its citizens (high-ish level of home ownership, lower crime rates, universal healthcare, good public education); this country is very multi-cultural, and in any mid-sized city, you will find mosques and synagogues alongside one another, and these religions often work together on homelessness/poverty issues. The other country is extraordinarily violent, particularly when it comes to murdering school children en masse, its healthcare is expensive and inadequate to its citizen's needs and its public education system is totally broken, but claims to be a Christian nation.

It's quite clear that Godde favours diversity. Otherwise we'd have one or two species of beetle, not thousands.
