I remember that, when she was discussing it then, and the disability community online was concerned and sad about it.

She didn’t have a terminal illness, she had a lack of proper care for a non terminal illness.

It’s been pulled because Glenn Beck and that ilk got a hold of it. The far right is co-opting this - and they have no business doing so as they know nothing of the disability rights struggle involved nor do they care. Their interest is in dangerous political games.

I find it even stranger Simons would be involved. EDS isn't something I would connect to MAID unless surgeries were needed for complications and someone had other health issues or had done surgeries already.

Maybe we need better palliative care? I have shared elsewhere what it can offer but seems like most (all?) healthcare systems in Canada only offer it as end of life care.

Several in the online disability community got to know her. I didn’t have any direct interaction with her but I remember her name (“Kat”) being honoured/ in thoughts, before she died, while she was going through troubles.

I feel she was used - while looking for meaning when she had no options. I’m glad, at least, that misplaced right wing attention caused them to pull the ad.

It’s wrong that she died. I feel scared for others, and myself. Expansions are happening so quickly and it’s moving into involuntary territory, too - there are murmers and pushes toward that. I guess I should discuss that on a different thread. But I can’t right now it’s just too stressful at the moment.

We need better everything. Bill C7 shouldn’t have passed when they know full well supports aren’t there. It targets not-dying disabled people without means. That was deliberate. The govt knows what the social determinates of health are. As far as I’m concerned they’re culpable for murder at this point. And I feel the same way about Simons for producing the video that could be coercive to others - who knows how many vulnerable people were compelled by it.

There’s zero context in the “ad” … it just glorifies death by MAiD in a very abstract, visually compelling way.

MAiD was headed this way anyway. It’s how the original law was written to cast the net over “disability”.
