My mum started menstruating at 10 -and, knowing nothing, it was a huge shock for her.
Sooo, determined not to make the same mistake, she tried to talk to my sister and I when we were 7 and 9, she gave us this book to read, entitled "You're A Young Lady Now". On the cover there was this girl looking into a mirror wearing jeans and sneakers. On the other side of the mirror there was this woman with a beehive hairstyle, ball gown and high heels.
Geez, at 9, this was a shock!!!
And then when I read about bleeding once a month from "down there" (it didn't even have a name!) I went from shock to horror.
This put me into a state of cognitive dissonance - not that I knew it at the time - but denial did seem the best solution for a nine years old kid.
'Well, what do you think?" asked Mum.
"I don't believe a word of it", I replied. "It says when you bleed you, you wear these pads. How come I've never seen sheep in the paddock wearing pads - and they have baby sheep?"
"Chris", said Mum sounding somewhat exasperated, "You're impossible - forget about the bloody sheep."
