Cleared our driveway. Neighbour is away so cleared his. Three more doors down a woman was struggling to shovel in her pajama pants, which seemed like a poor fashion choice, so I cleared her driveway. She never cleared the slush at the end so I got a pick from my shed and chipped away.

Then my neighbour 2 doors down on the opposite side was struggling with her shovel so I cleared her driveway. She was very thankful and forced a $20 bill in my hand. Then I did the driveway between us.

Five driveways cleared, one frozen windrow chipped out. Made $20.

I suck as an entrepreneur.
Ok, so we headed north tonight as Zach has a PA day tomorrow.

Before leaving I walked around the corner to get the mail. A woman we sorta know was shoveling her own driveway. She's in her 60s, I'm sure. We had spoken before. She's an interesting person.

Her basic story is that her husband never let her spend money. They had money, but he controlled it and she didn't know exactly how much they had. Their son was an aspiring pianist and she wanted to buy a really nice piano for him, but was denied by her husband.

So then he died.

With access to the cash, she moved to our neighbourhood in a 3000sf house with a 3 car garage, bought a baby grand piano, and has a ridiculous garden.

And for some unfathomable reason, has not contracted out her snow clearing.

So before we left tonight, I cleared her driveway. I took Zach and he shoveled her steps. Then on the way back I walked the snowblower past a guy shoveling, so I took a couple more minutes to clear his driveway. He offered money and I declined. Still no entrepreneurial skills.

Just to rub it in…in parts of the west coast we’re having some early cherry blossoms in bloom. That’s earlier than the 2010 Olympics when they had to bring in snow machines and the world laughed.

That said, we’ve had some windy and cold rainy days, and I wear a scarf and gloves outside (the little stretchy ones is all I need). I have been wearing an insulated rain coat that’s warm enough for this weather, all winter so far. I wouldn’t say it feels warm out, exactly, though. It’s not spring weather yet - but the birds and cherry blossoms seem undeterred.

I read, it’s due to climate change, sadly. It’s at least a month early for the earliest cherry blossoms.

I saw a couple walking the other night, who caught my attention - a woman was wearing what looked like sundress, maybe a lightweight formal dress, with no coat (he was in dress pants and shirt and tie so it must’ve been some formal occasion) - and she didn’t look cold. Maybe a bit ambitious, I thought. I got a chill just thinking about being outside in that. Then again, there are lots of shorts-all-year people, usually men, around. It’s a thing out here. Even if there’s snow. Especially people who move out here from cold places. They like to taunt, “It’s balmy out you wimps!”

Good Friday morning! Cleaning out driveways, hydro restored, trips on a PA day, people who wear shorts in winter, even avocado toast gets a mention. Lots to chat about as we gather round the Coffee Cart. Here, over tea, coffee, and baked goods, we chat, we support, and we connect in community. The Wonderbakery has provided us with croissants this morning, with a few toppings for them, to enjoy. The tea water is boiling, the coffee freshbrewed, and the croissants warm and flaky. All is ready, all are welcome. Come join in the fun, and share your thoughts!

haha, i read that, and I went, wait, what...it's not Good Friday.

Well, actually, it is, in a way.
My sister has booked her flight for a visit in February. It has been a while since we saw each other, due to political climate in the US, health issues (mine) and delays in getting documentation required (hers).

I am so looking forward to seeing her, and just being together.

Wow. A croissant will go down well today. I'm putting out some Camambert that is at the perfect stage. of runny. Help yourselves. It appears that I can't spell the name of the cheese but I expect you will figure out what I mean!

We had friends over last night for dessert and games. We do this once in awhile. They travel a lot, so we fit it in between their trips. It was her 70th birthday at the end of December, so I made a belated happy birthday cake...chocolate turtle cake...and we sang and celebrated. She gave me a gift (it's not supposed to be that way!) She had painted a picture of the farmhouse where I grew up. It was demolished a couple of years ago, and I had shared my last, sad picture of it with her. She created a thoughtful happy picture. p.s. the recipe for the cake was new to me, but it turned out to be quite good. I tend to experiment with new recipes whenever I have company!

Good morning! The weekend is here. Hope it turns out well.
A 70th birthday celebrate, even a few days late; a visit from a sister next month (hope the ornery weather cooperates!, plus whatever arises today meets us as we gather round the Coffee Cart, for tea, coffee and baked goodies, as well as conversation, support, and camaraderie. This morning the Baker has created several sorts of muffins to enjoy. The coffee is freshbrewed, the tea water is hot, the muffins are warm and fresh. All is ready, and everyone is welcome. Come join in the chats!

Thanks Red….sipping coffee while I stare out at more snow.
The accident I told you about earlier reverberates through our community. The 2 year old died as did the driver of the van that hit head on. The mom was pregnant, baby was delivered but will have severe problems due to lack of oxygen. Mom is having multiple operations for head injuries and fractures. Our city has been contributing to a gofundme page far surpassing original goal. I think many of us give because we have no idea how else we can help this family.
