Getting pumpkin seeds ready to roast was a lot of work for me. Only did it twice. No pumpkin this year. We had stuffed butternut squash for supper tonight.

I know. When I was sewing with a friend at her house I made myself one, too, but mine is more like a big pouch with a few pockets on it. No quilting, no binding.

This is a pattern from byAnnie. Her patterns usually include quilting. There is a stabilizer between the two layers of cotton. I love her patterns

Quilting makes a lot of sense for stability. I guess I just didn’t think of it at that time. I got a piece of cardboard in mine.

I use a product called Soft and Stable. It's a foam that's great. There's supposed to be a piece of plastic or something on the bottom to stabilize it more. I don't think I'll need it.

If I get a butternut or spaghetti squash with a lot of seeds I roast them too.
We both really enjoy them, I was going to get 2 pumpkins, saw the space in my cart, the cart and lots of great ones sitting there I grabbed a 3rd. Chemguy wasn't super impressed as the carver but if I ask him tonight I suspect the seeds will change his mind. Last batch is roasting now. I did get a carving set last year too which is much easier.

I want to try the store bought shelled ones sometime to make them a bit more accessible, not sure they will work out.

Good morning! Roasted pumpkin seeds, finished projects, leaves and rain, clothing storage and raincoats, cleaner and neater sheds, it all happens here. The coffee is perked, the tea water hot. Have a hot beverage and join in the conversation.

Happy Halloween, by the way.

Poor Nephew, is really sick.
COVID? Not a problem, he was confused why he had to stay home as 'he wasn't sick'. He hadn't had a COVID vaccine at that point.
Earlier this year though he was really sick with something, had to go to the emergency room as his breathing wasn't ok.
Right now seems like RSV, not sure if my sister is basing that on symptoms or if testing was done.

Good morning. It rained through the night at times and is sunny now. I heard an owl nearby early this morning. There was also another sound that was odd. I'm wondering if it was a rabbit that was on the owl's radar. The magic of wildlife. I'm not sure what's on the agenda for today. I may sew a simple bag made of leftovers from the big bag I made. I'll probably do some tidying up. We'll see what happens.

I have been admiring our squirrels. They are well and truly fattened up for winter this year and the grey who visits my deck just looks so plump and healthy. Must be lots of goodies around.\

One thing I miss around here vs. cottage country and my hiking in Quebec is red squirrels. They are a bit smaller and slimmer than grey/black squirrels but that red coat is just so lovely. And their chattering is so iconic. There was one living on the property at the cottage and he even cut loose right next to me one time.

I tend to apply that more to chipmunks. I had one decide to nest in one of my flowerboxes this year, or so it appeared. I didn't actually dig it up to see since Mrs. M had already put the annuals in by the time I saw them.

Squirrels in general are bastards
Fair enough. There were a bunch launching a concerted assault on a neighbour's bird feeders this afternoon. I could see into that yard from my bathroom window. One looked like a freakin' monkey the way they were hanging from one of the feeders.

My aunt and uncle have bird feeders in their yard. My uncle has tried many ways to thwart the squirrels to no avail. He's made peace with them and lets them eat what falls on the ground. I suspect he knows they will go on the feeders too.

The red ones chase away the grey ones that we have at the cottage. I mean, they're all entertaining in their own ways, and for us they aren't destructive, but the red ones can be much more territorial and aggressive.

I saw a flying squirrel one night at our platform feeder for our dream house on a lake acreage in NE Alberta in the mid 1980s. Incredibly beautiful. We had an Aspen forest with many other kinds of bushes around the house. We sold it so I could go into ministry. We had blue Jays, gray jays, downy and hairy woodpeckers, pine and rose grosbeaks, magpies, and other birds that came to that feeder, along with the squirrels. One day I saw an oriole in the tree above our house as I looked through the bedroom skylight. We were in the parkland in an area close to boreal forest and farms.

Chipmunks I always think of as being much nicer than squirrels. Don't tend to see them in the city much, need to get out into a provincial or federal park. They are cuter. We fed them peanuts out of our hands once at a cabin. It ended when my finger got bit - no broken skin. It probably thought it was grabbing a peanut. But at that age that was enough trauma for the day.

I think that's happened to us when we used to feed them at the cottage. I don't remember ever getting bit, just their paws brush my fingers, but I think someone else got bit once.

Chipmunks can easily get too tame and become a problem. Do you really want them climbing up your legs or chairs? Just saying.

They will get inside, too searching for those peanuts they know you have in there.

My mother-in-law used to sit quietly so the chipmunks would come up and take peanuts from her. This of course delighted her grandkids. She taught them how to do that too. I'm not sure if they came into the cottage or not.
