Good morning. Hubby has headed off to the golf course while I am here. A friend and former coworker will be coming over for a visit in an hour or so. We had breakfast with her and her spouse yesterday and had an enjoyable visit. We went to friends for a visit yesterday afternoon. That was a trip and both of us had to do some tongue biting. He is a retired RCMP who has always had very black and white, conservative views. She was always more moderate. They are unvaxxed and recently recovered from being quite sick. She knows they had covid, he doesn't believe it was covid. We were treated to some wild theories and such. It was exhausting. They have a fabulous garden and have been growing more of their own veggies. They are working on being more self-sufficient. They want to move to a rural property so they can be more self-sufficient. The "woke" mayor of this town won't let them have chickens in their backyard.

So, today is another day. I'm thankful I didn't live here during the pandemic. I look forward to a visit with my friend this morning and the "woke mayor" and her husband this afternoon.

It's frustrating and kind of scary to see so many public service people (like nurses and rcmp) resistant to public health measures. I don't get it.

Yes, supposed to be that sorta temp off and on for the next couple of weeks. Got lamb shanks braised in the oven tonight before it got too hot. I have liver and sweet potato chips to make for the granddog, but hoping the new dehydrator is cooler than the oven.
I use the slow cooker quite a bit during hot days. I enjoy putting it out in the backyard to do do it's thing while I stay cool inside!

I've been thinking of that too. Not to mention that apparent disdain he has for certain groups - Indigenous, LGBTQ+, "woke", etc. Thankfully he's retired.

Chemguy keeps explaining to me how many people in rural areas like to proclaim how independent and self-sufficient they are. They seem rather clueless that in reality, they actually cost the system more. And let's not forget during COVID who was putting the most pressure on the hospitals in the cities.

The backyard chickens surprises me a bit though, where do they not allow those? They are allowed here, but there are rules to prevent them from being a nuisance to neighbours. I have no idea how well it works, I know of 1 person who had them in the city (before they were allowed actually, her neighbours were a much bigger nuisance so she just went ahead). Never actually saw any in person.

Actually, lots of cities put restrictions on keeping livestock within city limits.

From London's animal control bylaws:

4.2 Class 1 - keeping - within City

No person shall keep a class 1 animal within the municipal boundaries of the City of London.

4.3 Class 2 - keeping - within City

No person shall keep a class 2 animal within the municipal boundaries of the City of London.
And the definitions of class 1 and 2 animals:

2.2 Class 1 animal

"Class 1 animal" shall mean cow, donkey, goat, horse, mule, pig (swine) of all species including hybrids, pony and sheep.

2.3 Class 2 animal

"Class 2 animal" shall mean chicken, goose, turkey, duck and any domestic fowl.
And that is fairly standard around Ontario as far as I know.

How the (bleep) is restricting animals inside town/city limits "woke"? By-laws like that have been around for decades. In fact, a lot of "woke" people would be on his side, believing we should be more self-sufficient in food even within cities. I would say that resistance to relaxing those by-laws is more likely "NIMBY-ism" than "woke-ness".

I may have gotten lost on Northwine's travels. I think Calgary allows them too, so would just be surprised that Edmonton and Calgary both allow them but a smaller place in the province wouldn't.

It's not like keeping a pet here though, the city put together a decent program I thought to try to keep everyone happy as much as possible:

Although I've always wanted to have a few backyard chickens (and they're quite common in England, my cuz Andy had three escape artists when he lived with his mum), I'm going to add a word of warning in light of this years events: avian flu. I suspect that the ubiquity of wild bird feeders in the suburbs, coupled with people who don't really understand the danger of livestock diseases, could lead to HUGE problems in the commercial poultry industry.

This is a city of around 20,000 and change. There's a lot of deniers here. Must be something in the water.

Fort St John, BC. Apparently one reason given is the SPCA wouldn't know how to deal with problems. This though is from the couple who called the mayor woke.

Hell if I know. This mayor is a very strong woman who is business-minded and generally leans conservative. I would describe her as a practical conservative, not the current variety. She is also aware of social issues and works with Indigenous communities and organizations like Salvation Army. I suppose in this case, woke is anything not hatefully conservative. I'm more "woke" than the mayor.

Yeah, we did not put out a bird feeder this year and want a bird bath at some point, but didn't even bother looking this year like we used to. My sister was delaying getting backyard chickens because of avian flu I haven't heard an update from her yet on that.

My friend who keeps a few chickens on a hobby farm out of town (horses, goats, chickens, bees) did not put up her wild bird feeders this summer. Some people put up hummingbird feeders only, in that there's no danger of seed contamination.

I've been thinking about our visit with friends yesterday. They were surprisingly deep into the conspiracy theories. That was a surprise, especially from her. They (she?) called the mayor of this city "woke". I keep replaying the conversation. I want to ask her to define "woke" as she is using it. I want to ask her when she changed into a person who uses such labels.

I told her she is welcome to come out for a visit and tea. I would feel very comfortable having this discussion in person. Part of me wants to start the discussion through Messenger or texting.

How would you respond to this?

I am likely well into the "woke" category by their definition.

I'm not sure I can be friends with someone so hateful (apparently)

Was she not the type of person who would use Politically Correct/PC in the past?

Not at all. Her husband was. She was always more openminded and not given to labelling those who hold opinions that are different from hers.
Retired husband around her more than in the past/everything that has happened over the last 2 years, sounds like some influencers there.

On animals in town ... here in Fredericton there once was a professor that kept a pet donkey. A battle went on for years to eliminate the beast although I believe it was a miniature species. Eventually they outlawed it ... and enigmatically there are still asses on council fighting for position ... based solely on emotional aspects! Do pardox exist? Of course if one makes a rule one will declare that there is an exception ... usually the narc ... the blossoming one that doesn't appreciate humility ... it comes down tuit!

Why? Because of lapse ...
