It wouldn’t be prophylactic, since there had been infection already. Might depend on the depth of the wound.

He says only a little leaked out though, that he removed almost all of it intact so the infection shouldn't have been left behind. Given this guy's strong rep, I'm inclined to try it his way. He's supposed to be one of the top General Surgeons around here.

Oh, I am no surgeon. I usually do not take antibiotics easily. Just the thought of closing a wound that had infection in it made me think it would be good to fight it from the inside, since you can’t anymore from the outside ( i.e . cleaning, dressings)

That was my thinking at first, too, but he's pretty insistent to hold on to the script until I see if it is really necessary. I directly asked if he would take them in the same circumstances and he said he wouldn't.

Yep. Even gave me his cell with instructions to text him if I need help before I see him again on Wednesday (which gets me out of a boring meeting )

Umm - maybe TMI, but testing for occult blood in stool - you don't have to go anywhere but your own bathroom. Just get a little kit & follow the instructions ...

Yep, that's what I have to get. I guess I poop onto a plastic and then they examine my poop. Eww. This is why they earn the big money

Carolla - in this province the kit comes by mail and is returned to the local hospital lab. Hubby noted that this service ends at age 75. Do you know why there would be an arbitrary cut off? Right now he is claiming Agism - forcing older people to go to the Doc Office to ask for a kit!

I suspect it's because if you've had no positive results by age 75, the chances of a later positive are much reduced? I am on the 5-year plan for colonoscopies for the long term I gather because of strong family history among other indicators.

There certainly are lots of medical tests far more challenging than a stool sample. Some of the nuclear tests can be quite distressing - so are some types of scans. I loathe (but do my best to co-operate) with urinary testing, examinations of the internal 'private' parts, and pulmonary function tests. On the plus side - without them I would likely have died some time ago and never met you folks!
