My mom used to lock the basket to her scooter, so nobody could steal it when its parked and also have something fabricky on top of the basked which she tucked over her purchases, so 1. Nobody could exactly see what she got in there/ purse etc. And also it wasn’t so open to grab it and run ( Berlin city, I suppose has similar issues to BC cities).
This Christmas, I had my siblings send me the measurements of her basket and I sewed her an outside cover with a zipper on the top for quick access. I also made the top higher than the basket, like a little roof, so she can put more things in it than the basket is high.

Kimmio - I hear ya about batteries. Another part of the story of endless forced consumerism! Hubby protects his cell phone with an expensive Otterbox. Every new phone is a wee smidge different in dimensions than previous ones - so - new Otterbox every time. So incredibly wasteful.

We actually mandate those for certain company phones, esp. our drivers who are prone to droppage, but I am not sure you need that quality of case for regular personal use. For managers and execs (e.g. me) we use a cheaper, less armour-like case from Seidio and that's what I would probably recommend for personal use. It's obviously not as tough as an Otter (mine has a crack in it), but still protects the phone from most day-to-day disasters like dropping it on the kitchen floor. There's a rubber cushion with a thin metal shell that goes over top. Easier to get off than an Otter, too.

What's an Otterbox? (I suppose I could Google it - never heard the term before.)

Brand of the phone protective covers.
I have an otterbox, I didn't think I needed some that protective with my first smartphone (I went for a very long time with nothing on a flip phone - past 5 years). I found though that the stores that sell the phones often don't have other brands for the phone I want (not the most popular models) and with the credits it doesn't make sense to go elsewhere. I also started dropping my phone way more often - typically within the house - I think with being unwell I tend to be clumsier or just don't have the energy to clear things properly so end up accidentally shoving it off a counter when trying to create some space. So probably worthwhile to have the better protection.

And then there are people like my sister - goes around without anything on her phone. She bought a new phone while on mat leave and was crying when she cracked the screen within a week of getting it. She always has cracked screens.

I seem to do just fine with those little leather wallet type cases. Means I've got somewhere to tuck license, ownership & insurance so that if I'm just going out with the dog or something, I can leave my wallet and purse at home. Provides sufficient protection for screen,, but definitely not waterproof.

My phone is probably 6 years old and is not a smart phone. Looking at the prices for covers, I bought it a carrying pouch for a small camera that has a clip on it, so I can clip it to my pants if I don’t have any purse or pocket. Spend about $7. Dropped it twice in te parking lot, still good. Just have a cheap phone, that way you don’t have to worry.

I can understand companies providing Otter boxes for their employees phones. Not sure that individuals can best decide what other individuals need to protect their phones though. I think my partner made a smart choice,even though it cost more dollars.
