Oh that's horrible @Pinga. Those conversations about failing abilities are so difficult, and so often avoided. Your situation is a heartfelt reminder to all of us I think.

Community Care Acces Centre, now known as LHIN (Local Health Integration Network) due to the province amalgamating them with another body by that name. They manage longterm and home care in Ontario.

They also are a connection facility -- so meals on wheels, day care programs, and home cleaning, and lots of other services to help seniors stay in their home are done through them.

Getting Care at Home

It also isn't just for seniors.

Yep, people with disabilities who need in-home or longterm care go through them as well. It's a good system on paper and the CCACs/LHINs are better run than many other Ministry of Health programs. They are sometimes hell on Earth to deal with from a provider standpoint, though. I certainly had a better experience with them as a client (when finding care for Dad) than I have had as a provider.

In NS the service is free and done by volunteers.
If she runs into things- its time to have a uncomfortable talk about giving up driving. Can she imagine what happens how she would feel if she runs over the neighbours dog or child? Would she really want to live with that? What alternatives are available? How much is she spending on the car and how far does she get with that by taxi/ alternative transportation?
Which family members can help out?
She doesn't run into things. It's moreso tripping over something when not looking directly where stepping due to limited peripheral vision. With people, it's an issue of them coming up to her side, especially when she's focusing on something in more detail (reading a menu, looking at a price tag, etc). While her eyesight has gotten a bit worse with aging, I don't think there's been a huge change.

Thus I am impaired by those opposed to non stoicism and change ... a fixed cosmos?

When will the stoned learn? Padee on the backside ...

Do you feel safe driving with her? Do you feel her neighbourhood is safe? Often people stop driving too late because nobody dares saying it out loud. I have a friend whose mother in law had developed early dementia. She suddenly didn’t know how to drive her standard car anymore. The family didn’t get the warning signs and bought her an automatic car.

It would depend where and how busy. On that big diamond interchange that is the 1st one in Canada? No. She won't drive on that though. That's not a change though, I would have felt the same way if that had existed when I was a teenager.

Peripheral vision is also kind of funny walking vs driving. With driving none of us have the full peripheral vision - car frames block out most of that. If she sat there trying to make out the number on speedometer while driving that would be a concern, because while focusing on that she wouldn't have the same level of peripheral vision to pick up on changes quickly. When driving the same vehicle though I don't think most of us look at the numbers - we know where they fall, so it's just a matter of looking at the relative location of the needle, no need to differentiate a 3 from a 5.

For those who haven't read the post in Health & Aging, our dear friend Crazyheart has had a heart attack and is presently in the Cardiac Care Unit. I feel the need to sit and just soak up the soothing vibes of the Room. I see that someone has been around tidying up, refreshing the woodstove, topping up the various beverages and snacks for us.

Ugh haven't heard from my Mom besides 1 text and that was a few days ago. My grandma has been hallucinating due to drug reactions. Chemguy told me to call her - I knew she was spending the nights at the hospital so was hoping this would be a good time (not sleeping, not talking to the doctor as they tend to do the information during days from what I have seen) - nope. I thought I was going to get her voicemail but she picked up after quite a few rings just to get me off right away. Turns out she's basically at the hospital all the time.

Oh, it is so hard to deal with hallucinations. I am hoping things get easier, @ChemGal
While I don't know if it's part of the part this time, in general I do feel frustrated with healthcare. I feel like there is overconcern related to some risks where as others are outright ignored at times.
This is not the first time she has been hospitalized and a pain specialist doctor did help the last time due to problems with meds. I really wouldn't be surprised if that past experience was ignored/not documented where it can be accessed - and my mom doesn't have all the info related to that.

Some kids in NS have the fourth day without school today due to the weather. Should have become a teacher.
At the same time, the news says that the temp of our world is rising much more than expected.

Wow. Our schools were closed for three during Snowmageddon and I thought that was bad.

And, as always, rising global average temp doesn't all areas get warmer. It's the average across all regions so as long as most are getting warmer, it will rise. And a 3 or 4 degree rise in many parts of Canada still ends up cold.

However, for something like this storm, the more important thing is the impact to weather. Many scientists predict more frequent extreme weather as a result of climate change so having more storms like this fits in perfectly.

Let's also all remember that cold and snow are not a direct correlation. There's a "sweet spot" for maximum snow at just a few degrees below zero. When it gets too cold, less snow. So, in Canada, in the winter, global warming likely means MORE snow.

Usually, the first time of snow in November is a day off, because they still don’t have all the ploughs and vehicles on the road. Usually, that’s it until late December. We have had really cold and ice on the roads and no sand trucks out until late in the day, that was dangerous and that was two days in a row. Now today, whichever school was not canceled in the morning likely got canceled at noon because of power outages from the wind- and something happening in the NB power grid. If we have more of this weather, parents need to start home schooling.

That's pretty ridiculous. I think every city take a little bit to get all the winter plans into action. My schools would be open though. Sometimes bus service would be cancelled if it were too dangerous and kids might stay home, but the schools were still open. Most of the time though roads aren't all that dangerous, things are just slow. And the time of that is Sept-Oct here.

Power outage I get, that really limits what can be done in a school and there are also safety issues.
