I went to the Unitarian Church in Halifax today (and did some shopping after). Just wanted to check out how they do their service. 80 minutes drive to church (in good weather) isn't really an option. They had a community choir as a guest- how refreshing- no robes and they just sing out of pure joy- everyone accepted no matter what their skills. I wish we had that option here where I live, I would try it out for sure.
The service was similar to UCC- but no word about God or Jesus. ( My present UCC congregation has new ministers and they seem to emphasize Jesus much more than I can/ want to/ handle). Because of it being the last day of Hanukka, a Menorah was lit next to the usual chalice. There were two occaisions where the congregation was ask to contribute their thoughts- I liked that, our UCC used to have a more contemporary service in which we also go into discussion. It was interesting. I liked the different sources for quotes. The sermon was held by who I think must have been a member of the congregation and was called "through the lense of wonder".
I talked to the minister briefly and was invited to coffee- however, it was very much like my own congregation- you talk with the ones you know after the service, I didn't get into a conversation with anyone in the congregation, though I really wasn't shy and tried. I didn't stay long.

We went there sporadically when Mrs. M taught at Dalhousie. It was really the first UU church we "belonged to" though it was short lived since she moved back to Ontario to take up a post at Western here in London shortly after we got married. Haven't had much contact with them in over twenty years, though my ears prick up whenever news from there is published in The Canadian Unitarian or other UU sources.

Well, they seem to be doing ok- the minister said that they can fit 80 people into the sanctuary (and with the choir today, there were thirty more)- so it was a bit crammed. They had about 8 kids and several people with disabilities, which is nice to see.

Attended our beautiful candlelight service this evening - the music was extraordinary, and the church was packed which was wonderful. We had special musical guests - a flutist who plays for us sometimes, and a string quartet from the Hamilton Youth Philharmonic Orchestra - all very accomplished musicians. We're also blessed with a terrific organist who played a solo piece this evening too. Our usual three church choirs swell at this time of year, with some making time to join just for the season, which is great - our choral director is such a gifted young woman. The readers had great voices, and the stories they told were captivating. Mulled cider and lots of baking topped off the evening. Feeling more "Christmassy" now :-)

Wow...lots going on here that I've missed this past week. Merry pre-Christmas to all. I've been busy getting ready for Hibernation Day in my classroom tomorrow. We plan to eat and sleep. I think I'm ready for that!

Has anyone else in Ontario noticed how much fatter the squirrels are this fall? Apparently, when they don't have the super cold weather to cope with, they just keep eating to get ready...

I would feel a lot more Christmas-y if someone would help me get all the tree stuff indoors...

Yes Bette - ours are VERY chubby this year!! And their coats look quite luxurious ... if only they weren't scratching all the time! Do squirrels carry fleas? Just a late night wondering ...

Mrs.Anteater - it sounds like you had a really meaningfulf experience at the UU church in Haalifax. I could easily be attrrracted to that type of service, although I am sure I would miss the Christian references to God (I too prefer the emphasis on God, who I see through Jesus). Although with church attendance shrinking in recent decades, I sometimes wonder if we should have more than one worship service on Sundays, or at another time, or an alternate service once a month (I explored this a bit in Pilgrim's thread). Continue with the usual service, but add another in which there could be alternative music, or discussion and interaction, or exploring ideas beyond the lectionary and beyond the Bible. A service that did more than lip-service to welcoming people of different ages (no Sunday School - children and youth are part of the congreggation), different physical abilities, different education levels, different experiences in life. I'm dreaming.

Yesterday our service was conducted by the children and youth - with the little ones dressed as Mary and Joseph, angels, shepherds and sheep - and the older ones putting on a bit of a drama, as well as leading in the call to worship, prayers, scripture reading - and lots of opportunities for the young people to share their musical talents. It was nice to see so many young people involved - we are an old downtown church with lots of seniors. But without young people of my own involved, I don't think it meant a great deal to me. Perhaps I could have used a more traaditional service if it had been offered, perhaps an evening service of carols and reflections. (ps - a few years ago, Granddaughter would have been heavily involved in writing the script and acting in the drama - Grandson would have found it embarassing and a bit foolish dressing up in burlap or like a sheep. He would prefer 'learning something'. He is eleven.)

Different strokes for different folks.

Following from your pageant reference Seeler - My friend is a minister - she asked her son - about 5 years old - if he'd like to be an animal in the pageant at her new church. "Only if I can be Chewbacca" was his reply! Not sure how it all turned out in the end, but she sure does have interesting chats with those kids of hers!

Well there are a number of stories in which the Star of Bethlehem is a spaceship, so why not the Millennium Falcon?

I once worried about trying to make it at least appear to be authentic - angels in similar costumes, sheep all alike, Mary and Joseph near the same age and size. Now, its almost anything goes - Mary might be a tall ten-year old, and Joseph a little kindergarten boy. And baby Jesus - usually a doll, but sometimes a baby born into the congregation during the past year - as apt to be a girl as a boy, and maybe six months old. the animals in the stable might include a zebra or a polar bear; why not a unicorn, or a creature from another part of the universe?

Similar to this, my sister Kae told me that her church's Christmas pageant this year included a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and a unicorn at the manger.

Chew Bacchus ... the ruminating of devious words ignored by bulky hosts?

Does the eternal like di verse IDe? Then why did people enter the equation ... a form of equity to balance far out intellect? Webster declared intellect beyond the bode of the emotional ... I wait for the great escape ... it is said to be patient so as not to get into the wrong train of thought ...

I know a professor of Ethics without Morals ... ID was indicated he didn't know the difference ... thus the mean or medium on the topic was left afloat ... as a drifting mine or deep well in the sans ...

Hugs to you and Mr. Seeler as you get ready for the schooldays. Here's wishing some pain free days and happy memories.

Today is our laast day this year for providing lunch, vouchers, etc. for our guests at our church W@W (Wednesdays at Wimot) program. A church member has provide us with enough new socks that each guest will receive a pair. And we are bringing in special cookies and decorations to try to make this a festive occasion.
It would be nice to be open next week, and the week between Christmas and New Years, but it is only possible to spread our volunteers so far ... And other people and organizations are taking up the slack - providing Christmas turkey dinner for instance.

Tonight is our annual Christmas Banquet at church. We invite our friends and neighbors to join us for a turkey supper, followed by prayer, a Gospel message, singing, and a performance by our Youth Choir.

Oh oh - a Christmas banquet during the season of Advent ... is that okay?? Just teasing you a bit jae after your insistence in the Virtual Secret Santa threat about not delivering a Christmas gift during Advent - that it MUST be on Christmas!

Hoping everyone enjoys the feast and music by your youth choir ... sounds like a nice evening.

The timing of the event is inappropriate, as is our holding our Christmas Sunday service on December 20, as is our having sung Christmas and Epiphany songs for the past three weeks now. What can I say? I tried to tell everyone in my first Advent devotional that we ought not be singing Christmas carols yet. They didn't listen. The following week the Worship Team led us in even more Christmas carols. It's frustrating, and not helpful towards observing Advent.

Thanks Carolla. The key thing to us is the Senior Pastor's Gospel message. The rest is just designed to get the people in a good mood ready to hear it.

Not unlike when seminars to sell timeshares also provide a light lunch.
