Room For All

Welcome to Wondercafe2!

A community where we discuss, share, and have some fun together. Join today and become a part of it!

Good morning! Another nice autumn day in this area, cool and clear, and sunshine through the day. Hope your day's weather is as pleasant too. We gather round the Coffee Cart once more, for conversations old and new, for support to and from one another, and for camaraderie. This takes place with coffee, tea, and the output of our Wonderbaker. This morning, the Wonderbaker has produced 2 large batches of fudge, one chocolate and one maple, for us to indulge in.
The tea water is boiling, and the coffee is fresh brewed. The fudges are cut up and ready to eat. All is ready, all are welcome. Come in and join the chats!

Pie is perfect as comes in endless numbers and no mortal can control the diminishing end ... then it starts all over ... unending sory of the progress of mind ... a soul thing!

And the soul travels ... l like the devil following lightly after the previous mystery ... questions? Certainly as we can never be sure of anything material ...

How was the writing day Jayne? I whipped up a story for an on-line writing group to which I belong. Sadly, the group is not very active, and I am one of two people who have uploaded a story in the last several months. I wrote one in the spring and was dismayed that the only comment was from someone who focused on one aspect of the story (her focus told more about her than it told about the story). It was about my experience in a hospital ward for five days...written with a kind of learning and care about the voices I heard beyond my curtain. Her focus was that there was a man in my room! So she didn't get it. Maybe all writing is like that. The author can only do so much and the reader turns it into something meaningful for them.

It was wonderful Nancy. Fifteen women gathered at st. Brigid's in Guelph. Cooperative effort, potluck.

One of our Wondercafe moms, Daisy Jane, was the organizer.

I may start a thread re writing groups.

Sorry about the lack of response to your writing

Woo hoo!! Fudge!! Fudge was a Christmas treat in my family, my dad's contribution to the festivities. My youngest brother made it occasionally, too, after Dad stopped.

StoriesSpace, where I post, is pretty dead. Better than that, but still down to only half a dozen a month vs. a couple a day years ago. I'm kind of mired in a long form story that I can't seem to shake off so I haven't published much this year myself aside from my annual Halloween horror story.

I thought I'd share what I did on Thursday, both because of the thoughts re Guys and Dolls, and also how things can unexpectedly trigger a past grief.

Thursday was a day spent with two different friends, both named Jane (what are the odds), exploring the arts.

It started with a trip to the delightful Stratford Festival where we njoyed the gardens before seeing Guys and Dolls. The quality of the performance was as we expect from Stratford, exceptional.

I admit that at times I was uncomfortable with the musical's attitudes towards women, and found myself wondering how it could be shifted (a bit like "Baby It's Cold Outside", but, shifted my brain to enjoy the production, and let it go as a reflectio of its time.

A quick trip back home, and then on to Emmanual in Waterloo to hear The Pairs -- a group knew to me, so wasn't sure what to expect, but, knowing the sound quality at Emmanual and the vibe of the place, I knew that I would enjoy.

Their complex harmonies and poignant stories and writings were a wonderful contrast to the earlier musical. Intimate setting. Storytelling. Delightful.

What I didn't expect, was it triggering a tangent of what-if's.

Hillary of the Pairs shared the story of their name. As it turned out, Nicole & Noelle are twins, and Hillary also has a twin. They grew up together as their mothers were friends, having found they were both expecting twins within two months of each other in 1990.

I looked at them, and my brain split off, one part still listening to the harmonies, the other pondering Veronica (Ronnie) and Margarent (Peggy) who were born and died in 1990.

They too would be 36 now.

The what-if's filled my mind. What would their lives be like? Would they be mothers too?

So I smiled.

I was thankful that seeing these wonderful women on stage hadn't triggered painful grief, rather brought warm thoughts, gentle memories, and a little wondering about what might have been.

"triggering a tangent of what-if's."

Therein the sentimental journey ... some without empathy wouldn't get ... it is extreme as tyranny !

In my career I deal with a lot of toxic water and environment ... now I deal with that spirit and question what to hell is wrong with our desires, not to mention our psyches/minds? Soul rot?

I love a nice pork or veal pie with the jelly and the hot water pastry. In more ambitious days I made them.

"Meat pie" often seems a euphemism for disguising some leftovers. However we had a group of women and men at the church who met bi-weekly, made turkey pies (from whole turkeys) and beef pies (from beef mince), called themselves The Holy Rollers, and were a steady fundraiser until most of them got too old...

Wow - fudge is such a special treat. I'll nibble on a bit of the maple. My dad used to make it everyally Christmas. My partner makes it now. Our family r really like fudge with bits of ginger mixed in.

I declined an invite to see Guys and Dolls, mainly because I knew it was not my cup of tea, despite appreciating the social aspect and being considered was nice. I would prefer using my increasingly limited resources of time, dollars and energy on what is authentically enjoyable for me. Maybe that sounds picky. It's necessary as my health gets dicier.
But fudge! Love it any way it comes. My mother made it occasionally-- not nearly often enough for my liking...my favourite was her divinity fudge with walnuts, but the brown sugar and chocolate were wonderful too. I don't make it since I can't have sugar in the house (don't ask).

I know nothing about Guys and Dolls beyond the title and some of the music. Not a musical that ever interested me.

divinity fudge with walnuts
Oo, fudge with nuts is divine, IMHO.

Nice walk today. This weather is welcome to continue as long as it wants. Lots of people out walking, many with their canine companions in tow.

We're going to a different church today. Then we'll make our choice between the four churches we've visited recently on which will be our new church home. There's a couple I'm leaning towards - a Presbyterian and a Baptist

Back to Baptist, eh. Sounds like you might be coming full circle. Good approach. Maybe I should try the same, though I have sampled most of the churches that would be options. Then again, all of them have changed ministry since my last visit so maybe I need to do it anyhow.

Yes, well said, Mendalla. And it's exactly full circle. We're going back to a visit to the Baptist church we left 6 years ago. The same pastor's there, and I think many of the same people. What may have changed somewhat is my theology.

Do any of the churches that you've sampled stand out as better choices more than the others? Are there options you've yet to consider?

Went to a coaching seminar today. Had a really good session about effective communication for coaches. I learned a couple of things and it reinforced some things I already do.

This was followed by an ex-athlete now doing some consulting work and a masters in creating effective coaching environments? I think. He was a terrible communicator. It was ironic how he needed to follow the advice of the previous presenter because it was 35 minutes into his hour that I realized what he was even getting at.

Essentially, there is a permanent environment and a mastery environment. As coaches we want to not focus on the performance metrics or comparisons, and focus on the mastery of skills that will bring the results later. Young athletes focus on performance too much before they master the skills. It leads to kids not having fun and quitting when not performing well instead of celebrating their improvements.

Had he only said something like the above. That's me distilling his words into something I can understand.

That says quite a mouthful for as a child we face 2 things we know nothing about anything and we know little about communicating it because fresh out of the bucket we are blessed with the idea that we are endowed with all we need. We just can't understand it.

A couple (if not more) of the courses I've taken over the years the presenter left me baffled with what they were trying to teach because of exactly what you speak. Oral communication is significant as it written because in the writ you can go back and refresh that mind that isn't holding on well to the ideas. It is a strange quirk that causes the pain the results in long term grasp ...

Hang onto that thought ... because it never is orderly when dealing with love and other sidetracks ...

Good morning! Another cool, sunny morning here. For coaching days, writing days, new congregations to experience, ad all that goes on this weekend, and things still to happen, we give thanks. We gather round the Coffee Cart to discuss it all, and drink tea and coffee, as well as enjoy the Wonderbaker's efforts. We chat with each other, support one another, and deepen our community ties.
This morning, the Wonderbaker has prepared for us doughnut holes or many different varieties to enjoy. The tea water boils, the coffee finishes its brewing cycle, and the doughnut holes are warm and ready to serve. Allis ready, all are welcome. Come in and join in!
