This has been done to death. Abstinence as sex ed leads to more teenage pregnancies and STDs. Ask Bristol Palin. She will stand there with her child in her arms and tell me I'm wrong.

It's not consistent. Religious groups are always trying to derail changes to the curriculum. Specifically Catholic groups.

Again, I don't understand why anyone cares what Catholic bishops say about sex ed. If they don't approve of sex ed curriculum, it's probably a good idea to implement it.

Jon said kids who've had sex ed wait on first having sex. Jobam said kids who've had sex ed are having sex earlier. There's a discrepancy there.
Please quote where you are getting that from Jobam, I'm not seeing that in his posts.

The only thing I remember. Boys and girls separate to see a film about the birth of a calf. made no sense then and makes no sense now.

Hi, two things.

Catholic School Boards don't have sex ed - remember they are publicly funded.

Second - I saw a post from Rita saying the site is slow - I agree - its really hard to keep up with posts - emails come, you open - the problem being is they show the first page of the topic rather than the last - I was looking for my post etc but realized I wasn't on the right page. Kind of weird. It slows down quick responses. Sometimes you latest post doesn't show up.....

Regarding the Catholic schools --- where are you living that that's the case Jobam? I thought they had to teach it here in Ontario.

HI Pr. Jae - I was going by what youth have told me - perhaps it might be more politically correct to say very little sex ed. They are religious schools so I'm thinking that what they teach is very limited. I am sure they are not instructed on how to wear condemns, what lubes work better, what consent is, when no mean no, how often to you check in with your partner, what STTD's are - the list goes on. More on abstinence than anything else and as we know that's not sex.

As far as I know Jobam - the Catholic schools in Ontario have to teach the same sex ed as the public schools do. It's all part of the same curriculum that must be adhered to by all publically-funded schools in the province.

What school boards don't have sex ed in them??

In some places it's so watered down as to be worthless. I live in a red state so my expectations are extremely low for my daughter and I'm honestly not sure how much better most blue states are really. I want to do something better than just give her a copy of "our bodies our selves" (teen edition) but I'm not certain what. Does anyone here have any ideas? She's 14 and not dating but that won't last forever (15 in 2 months). Also this threat started by one of far too many examples of what was supposed to be sex ed getting replaced by religious dogma.

Jon,

Kids at that age can take an honest discussion.

Why you might have sex ?
When would you know?
D you have sex to keep a boyfriend who pressures you?
What is a condom, what does it look like, how does it go on
What if it comes off
Would she like to go on the pill
(If she has acne it can help)
Why getting pregnant is an all round bad issue for young girls: abortion is a decision that lasts your lifetime, adoption is a decision that lasts your lifetime, being a teen mom and not finishing school lasts a lifetime.
........

A pot of tea, a quiet day. Sometimes it's easier to talk without her having a steady boyfriend already.
