Hi folks

I'm curious your thoughts re pot smoking in a public place.

Do you mind?

What limits would you set?

I don't mind it any more than tobacco. If it's transient it's no big deal. We were in an RV park in 2020 and were subjected to clouds of pot smoke and tobacco smoke courtesy of our neighbours. That was too much and the pot smoke was moderately worse

I wish people would choose something other than smoking. I've been pleasantly surprised that the legalization hasn't seemed to lead to much more than what there used to be, although there's also a number of places I'm not going because of COVID.
It's not just the 2nd hand smoke, it's the 3rd hand smoke too.

If an outside space, consideration of where people need to be, to pass, the wind direction, etc. and then also consideration of the 3rd hand smoke effects.

I have had to deal with some publicly shaming someone for smoking pot in a park.

I dealt with it for the behaviour of the shampoo ng, but was curious what others think of pot smoking.

I feel it reeks. It lingers on clothes. The smell drifts.

Shucks, the plants smell.

I can't imagine in an RV park, @Northwind . Hard on everyone

I suspect this is an autocorrect issue. I don't understand.

It was pretty gross. We couldn't figure out where it was coming from. We had our suspicions and when the offending parties left, the air was fresher. They were upwind from us so we did get quite a bit of it.

I suppose the benefit of living in an RV park is that they will eventually leave. Worse if they own the next door property. I don’t think any bylaw would help with the problem.
I had neighbours growing on the right and on the left of me, with one property between me and the right. The left ones used to smoke outside- thankfully the fence between us seemed to help a little bit ( and I think the predominant wind direction helped. But the wind waved the left side neighbours plant smell towards me. When I helped my neighbours in between us in the yard, I felt that I would not be able to enjoy my yard if I lived that close.
I mind regular smoke as well, but pot is like the skunk among the smoky smells.

Do people smoke pot in neighborhood parks by you?

Do you care?
If you do, what bothers you? What helps?

Is it different than smoking a cigarette?

I had neighbours who used pre-legalization in the mid-90s. My Lord, does it stink, even compared to cigars which I also detest. In principle, though, I don't care what someone is smoking (I grew up with pipe smokers). Burning leaves do not belong in a public place where people with respiratory problems or allergies could be exposed. Private property is best, wide-open spaces with a stiff breeze probably even better.

Many apartment buildings here ban smoking and vaping of any substance, even in the apartment you rent.
It's the landlord's private property, not the tenants', so I don't really see a problem. Less sure about condos where the residents technically own their unit, but given what busybodies condo boards tend to be, it would not surprise me to find it being attempted there, too. I was kind of thinking houses, I guess. I haven't lived in a shared property since 2000.

I live in a small town of 14,000. We have one giant LCBO at our biggest mall. When cannabis was
decriminalized and legalized, I envisioned that our town would now have one giant cannabis store as well.
But that didn't happen: we have 7 small cannabis stores, spread around the town. In some places, the cannabis
store has completely changed the tone of that street for the worse. And selling to minors is rampant, as police can not possibly patrol 7 stores as effectively as they can patrol the one LCBO store.

So I am against smoking in public places. I really don't think this has been the tax grab the government was hoping for, and a nasty result is that more kids than ever are trying cannabis, and will get hooke don it, and will feel empowered to try other drugs, which may be far more dangerous.

I haven't noticed much smoking in parks in the area. There's a small park right by me, I think at that one smoking may be legal - most parks there's a bylaw against it, but this one doesn't really have any of the amenities like a sports field. There's a few picnic tables, I have seen people playing cards and smoking/vaping fairly late. It's easy enough to keep enough distance to avoid being affected.

Lake, it's not allowed, I think there are likely some problems in the parking lot after hours, I do see teens head that way sometimes, they have also set off fireworks in the parking lot at night..

Another larger park with a parking lot is definitely more of a problem, again at night. There are always cars parked there, people smoking, drinking. Concerning with people driving plus we had a temporary community garden there, so a few of us were often cleaning up the site - broken glass, cannabis packing, food packing left there. It wasn't something happening during the day. I know people who lived across the street were concerned as no big surprise, people buying/selling/consuming drugs in the parking lot were also often up to no good in other ways. If I lived across the street, I would likely be discussing things with neighbours, calling bylaw often.

I kind of wonder if that is what should have happened. The government kept control of online selling so maybe they should have done the same for brick and mortar sales. Cannabis stores seem to be rampant around here and I have no idea how many or which ones are properly licensed ones.

Quebec is likely the most restrictive province when it comes to cannabis laws. Essentially, unless you are a homeowner, there are no legal spaces to smoke cannabis and vaping it is illegal and the items can't be sold here. You can smoke cigarettes pretty much anywhere outside (I loathe cigarette odour) and bring alcohol to parks legally.
No home growing whatsoever.
The hypocrisy is off the scale. I tend to think it's a puritanical hangover from having been controlled by the church for so long.
The idea that cannabis is "drugs" (on the level with meth) any more than a beer or two is hopefully on it's way out. People seem to make a big hoohaw out of nothing. I hope the ones bleating about the nasty weed smoke give equal shrift to nasty tobacco smoke. BTW, cannabis in liquid form, when vaped, barely smells at all and dissipates fast.

Thanks Ninj for coming to the dialogue.

I'm hoping @BetteTheRed joins in.

For the record, i am not antipot. Was for legalization.
Also , lol, i gave gummies in my secret Santa last year.

I had to deal with a post in another site from a person who was publicly shaming a pot smoker. Their purported concern was smoking near children.

It got me thinking.

Where do you smoke if you can't smoke at home? Can you go sit by the river and smoke? What are the evolving social norms?

And contrary to popular opinion, vaping needn't involved any chemical other than pure cannabis extract, although it often does.

I smoke at home, because I own my own home. I smoke and vape at the big guys. I'll vape many places outside of these where it's discreet. I smoke or vape at parties/gatherings where it's invited.

I find the concern for children a bit of a red herring. Yes, if you hot box a child in a smoky area or blow any kind of smoke at them, it's never appropriate. Should you smoke  anything in a playground? In front of kids? Near a school? Nope. Should you clutch your pearls at a whiff of weed any more so than cigarettes?

The person was complaining re someone talking to their grandkids whilst smoking a joint in the park.
Who knows, maybe they were walking by.

It's easier to speak to norma

It seems people here don't have a concern re public places (walking on a sidewalk , along a trail or in a park) butight draw exception if a playground was there.

Sigh, in my youth I wanted to sit on the swings and smoke a joint!
