It's basically a comment of despair. Sometimes used humorously, sometimes not.

Well, if we're getting into silly teenaged Internet lingo, YOLO*. If I never hear that again, I will be a much happier ape.

* That's "You Only Live Once" for those of you without teenagers in the family
 
Well, my current personal fav is "really" with a raised eyebrow that suggests you've taken leave of your senses. Or in text, simply Really.

I know that by this time next year, I will be considering it a verbal tic and trying to eliminate it. Such is humanity and words.

I actually thought it the L was luck when it first starting coming into my newsfeed as people were using it seriously over things that weren't a huge deal. Plus it just sounds better. When I found out it was life, I figured some people must have it extremely easy if their frustrating, but in the big scheme minor problem was enough to say FML over.
#firstworldproblems is something I can get behind. Not sure why that one hasn't been abbrev to FWP commonly.

Carpe diem sounds better :D (says the guy who has university Latin under his belt:cool:). I don't think the sentiment is worse, necessarily. I'm a fan of the Latin poet Horace who promoted the "carpe diem" idea throughout his poetry (in fact, the phrase "carpe diem" first appears in one of his poems). YOLO is clearly a modern nod in that direction.

It's just that the kids overuse "YOLO" to the point of losing the meaning. It has become an all-purpose thing to say every time you do something even mildly rebellious or dangerous. It is a phrase that shouldn't be heard daily, let alone hourly. IOW, they've neutered it in much the same way as they have neutered "awesome" (see @Seeler upthread for more on that one).

Along with YOLO is FOMO - fear of missing out.

A much used one from a local pastor - Thank you for sharing that (which seems to mean Too Much Information).
 
some very road-weary words (in Southern lingo 'they've seen 5 miles of bad road') that have evaporated into faint skin on spoiled milk through overuse. kids, try to use words sparingly -- our culture is littered with the hollow husks of overused word & phrases

Jesus
hypocrisy
faith
Canadian
