Novel Coronavirus

I'd do it now not wait to be exposed. My work is the sort of place where viral illness spreads fast. They jokingly call these "plagues" , but I suppose not in light of this situation.

I think one of the hardest things to cope with self isolation is the emotional and physical loneliness. It occurs to me that if my husband was still alive the loneliness factor wouldn't be a problem. I worry if this goes on for too long I'll end up like one of Harlow's touch deprived monkeys, as will the many the world over that occupy single households .And then there are those that experience another kind of loneliness, like Kimmio, who feel emotionally isolated from those that share the same household......

Still, as Carolla says, perspective is everything. Chances are that if my husband was still with me, we'd be showing our stress by bickering about nothing of importance. Such is life, Such is perspective.

Perhaps it would help if we could all widen our perspective - see the forest and not just our own maple for you, eucalyptus for me, single tree?

Imagine how god feels .. heh, chi, ET being out there all alone ... unseen since the beginning!

Might be too difficult for them to get the stuff in place now, it's unfortunate places don't have things set up already and having people working from home at times just because of life in general.
I agree. But we work with some sensitive information and a rotating staff so I think they'd rather keep it all in-house.

I do agree that if you shelter in your apartment you have less chance of getting the virus. But I believe experts expect this to last several months. Not two weeks

for the most part, the plans to cancel school for two weeks is just preliminary

ie. Ontario declared an emergency Till the end of the month. The reason? They can in,y declare for two weeks, then they can extend for two weeks, then they must have a vote in legislature to cintinue

I only say this because I get the feeling you think two weeks will keep you safe

better would be to work as normal, or have your office go on line. And wash and keep your distance

an issue is taking transit. That outs everyone in close contact and more at risk. However people do need to get to work so transit is still running

you have to do what feels right. But working and reaching out to Facebook groups for help seems sensible
Actually my work set-up is as much or more of a risk - I know that based on how much other stuff goes around like wildfire - plus many if not most staff take transit.

Our lives will be different afterward. We will have many limitations on our activities until there is a vaccine and better treatments. But these will come.
Multiple groups are working on vaccines and treatments.
kids are dying from the flu, even with vaccines and antiviral drugs.
You should start getting in touch with your elected officials. Governments are talking about providing assistance.
Ask for assistance and it may be there. Governments are scrambling to figure out how to help all the people affected by closures and quarantines

if you dont ask you won’t know
Welcome to reality. I hope nobody (me nor you) regrets their points of view right now, in a couple of months time.
Oath of Secrecy

I, 'government authority'
blank line
, swear that I will not, without due authority, disclose or make known to any person any document or information acquired by me by reason of the duties performed by me on behalf of or under the direction of a Parliamentary Review Committee established pursuant to the Emergencies Act. So help me God.

As a consequence ... one must accept all the things we don't know ... yet some of them will be mulled about!

Based on the conversations I am hearing here in the ICU, they expect the numbers to start ramping up next week.
Sadly, probably true. An infectious disease specialist I heard interviewed (and I've heard similar projections from others) says that given the current trends the peak of the virus won't be until around the second week of May, followed (hopefully) by a slow decline.

Crap. That means we may be in some kind of isolation until then.- and beyond.

Coronavirus Capitalism — and How to Beat It

Governments around the world are busily exploiting the coronavirus crisis to push for no-strings-attached corporate bailouts.
  • “I've spent two decades studying the transformations that take place under the cover of disaster,” writes Naomi Klein. “I’ve learned that one thing we can count on is this: During moments of cataclysmic change, the previously unthinkable suddenly becomes reality.”
In recent decades, that change has mainly been for the worst — but this has not always been the case.

And it need not continue to be in the future.

This is about the ways the still-unfolding Covid-19 crisis is already remaking our sense of the possible.

But this is not the whole story.

We have also seen organizing at the city and state levels win important victories to suspend evictions during the pandemic.

This crisis — like earlier ones — could well be the catalyst to shower aid on the wealthiest interests in society, including those most responsible for our current vulnerabilities, while offering next to nothing to the most workers, wiping out small family savings and shuttering small businesses.

But, many are already pushing back — and that story hasn’t been written yet.

Homeless people are most definitely vulnerable. What are you doing for homeless people?
I have been unable to do anymore for the homeless people today than I did yesterday ... but on both days I am aware that 'government' having always been aware of the problem have never prioritized a solution.

I am hoping that this crisis 'being different' will bring about lasting and effective measures ... starting with the most vulnerable as a first and lasting priority ... this would go a long way to reducing the impact of any future 'health emergency'. Bottom's UP!

How many believe that the larger powers see any benefit to the lesser people other than consuming themselves to support the distasteful alternate?

These are like baccus and are part of a poor bac ca laurate a spiritual plant that spreads ... but sending out messages in coded tongues ...

I chose the medium position as means of watching the poles from the fence ...

Problem with homelessness is the provision of food. Food banks don't help much with that. Raw carrots, potatoes and a lot of bread and canned goods aren't really helpful when you live in a tent. A "community centre"/Salvation Army, etc., that serves at least one daily meal, usually 7 days/week, is pretty essential for minimal nutrition. If these are closed, the homeless are actually in danger of starvation.

In these novel times of corona ... could we see the Universal Basic Income implemented?

Detractors traditionally argue that a UBI would either be unaffordable or the individual payments too small to compensate benefit-reliant people for the dismantling of the existing system.

They warn that giving people a guaranteed income from the state could damage the incentive to work.:sneaky:

The objection about undercutting work incentives manifestly lacks relevance in these circumstances of enforced shutdown.

The novel nature of the economic shock from the novel suppression measures taken by governments change the terms of that debate.

I think we now have a case for a flat payment to everyone globally in this major and possibly prolonged 'economic' crisis.

 It’s not just Toilet paper, water, and food; gun stores throughout the US are now seeing major ammo shortages and long lines of people waiting to purchase firearms in fear of what could come during a nationwide Coronavirus shut down.
