Novel Coronavirus

I have an appointment tomorrow with a new dermatologist, I called and asked not to be in the waiting room due to my conditions. They weren't very accommodating at all. I pushed more, my appointment was at 7:50 am so it's not like a bunch of coming and going at that time. They moved it up 20 min so that it can happen.

@DaisyJane I know that's a huge concern for Matthew. I hope he recovers.

The virus itself isn't a hoax.its a real virus. I think there could be a government(s) control element to this. That doesn't mean immune compromised people are not at more risk. They are. It's both/ and, imo.

To what end for the government control? This is going to have huge economic consequences. I can't see the government wanting that. It would be shooting themselves in the foot

My appointment on Thursday is at the cancer clinic. They're always aware of safety considering their customer base. Apparently they have stepped it up and are screening at the door and asking people to use hand sanitizer on the way in. That is comforting.

@ChemGal I'm glad they accommodated you a bit at least. Good luck to you. I hope it goes well.

The economy is down, health is failing .... insanity abounds ... yet there are those that state this greatness may continue into the heated months and times!

What else do we need to be forced to aggressively believe?

To me it feels like a big fire drill to see how much they can manipulate and control people, and the movement and gathering of people, and especially, protest - with sort of "rolling blackouts" to the economy. Online gatherings can be monitored and voices shut down in ways that protest cannot unless people are forced to stay home. The citizens of the world are restless (Chomsky wrote a book called The Prosperous Few and the Restless Many...just reminded me).

I think Canada doesn't know how much to play along or not, but they've decided to handle it in the nicest way possible. I sure as hell would not want to live in Italy or some small European countries close to Italy and Germany that are becoming more authoritarian.

And I think that because DT said it was a "Dem hoax" to begin with - the Dems reacted, and he faked everybody out into being super scared now, in the US.

If I am wrong I will eat my words but that is what I think right now.

I wasn't challenging you for the record @Kimmio Laughterlove. Thanks for explaining it more. I guess watching this with my current health situation makes me respond differently than I might have before. Of course, time will tell.

Who controls the government?

I am hoping that this event does make people look at policies with different eyes. Neoliberal policies have made the impact of this worse. Our hospitals have been cut to bare bones. Our local hospital here operates at over 100% capacity during normal times. How will a bunch of sick people with Covid impact it? My hope is that we realize we've cut too far and that we have to do some rebuilding.

And @Ritafee I do not need an education on the evils of neoliberalism. It's preaching to the choir here.

Oh ... efficiency demands that all marginal authorities be cut to minimum! Radical variations are just not acceptable ... you are not supposed to get ill ... it is a command!

Tell me I'm out of my head regarding economic guidelines. We used to have several oil refineries and many pulp mills ... now TP has vanished with the efficiencies ...

Yet there are a few well oiled hands ...

Does anyone here not know how to wash their hands yet?

How about staying home when you are sick? Anyone not know how to do that yet?

“Where did the Federal Reserve get the $1.5 trillion they just committed to injecting?”

Did the $1.5 trillion came from the same place as it always has: from thin air?

Did the Fed simply added some numbers into a balance sheet and the money was created?

Could the 'Authorities' do the same to fight our most pressing social problems:

Homelessness? Hunger? Crumbling infrastructure? Poverty? Inadequate Health Care? (to name but a few)

To do so would be to use the power of the government to help the great mass of people, rather than those at the top?

So this is all done to help those at the top?

(I fixed the formatting on your post Rita)

I'm scared. Not of getting sick, but of being totally alone and broke and not being able to see a doctor or stay in a hospital for other reasons if I ever needed to because they're all clogged up with hyper- focusing on this.

It's stupid. Why are they not reporting on all the deaths of all other causes everyday? If they did, the number of people dying from this would be small.

This disease has spared children...anyone under 39, in fact. The only people dying are the elderly and immune compromised, and even 85% of them survive. Are they reporting on every flu caused pneumonia? What about bacterial pneumonia? C Diff? Hepatitis? Staph? If they reported every death in those populations this would have some perspective. It's not polio! It's not even like that!

If it was like polio I could understand. I will eat my words if I'm way off base, but right now I'm upset, and not because there's a bug going around.

Patient one in Italy is 38, an athlete. He was in the ICU for a while. One of the doctors in China who died was 34 I thought?

The rate of death in under 39 is .2% They and a few others may be the only ones in the world.

Freak occurrences of deaths in otherwise healthy people occur with the flu also.

The Federal Reserve has moved decisively to counteract the economic impacts of the coronavirus. Unfortunately, because of how the Fed is designed, and the tools legally provided to it by Congress, all the central bank can really do is offer lots of easy money to protect the profits of big banks and wealthy investors.

You could imagine a different world where average citizens and businesses had accounts at the Fed (not just the big financial firms) and the central bank could create money and drop it directly into people's pockets, skipping the middle-man entirely. But it's not the world we live in.
