Novel Coronavirus

The woman who used to care for my nephews has covid, along with her family (at least 3 positive tests and at least 1 negative although the negative test was in a kid with symptoms, so probably just didn't get tested at the right time). They are almost out of the isolation period, all seem to be ok. One has a genetic condition involving development delays so good to hear they are all doing well. I think her biggest issue was being in isolation with 4 kids, recently blended family so 2 of hers and 2 of his.

Since her boys are the same age as my nephews and she had a "dayhome" (just her 2 kids and my nephews) for 3 years they were all close. They missed out on my nephew's birthday party so I think that was a pretty big disappointment for the one kid. Fingers crossed the stress with being stuck at home and feeling crappy for a few days are the only problems for them.

Stuck at home; hobbled? There could be some hair raising tales about escapism!

It is a round about kind of thought like ... circular thinking as we look back on ourselves ... impossible in many hard cases!

Would like to see this study replicated with Ontario deer. Definitely a worrisome finding in terms how we manage this disease in the future.

Of the deer's tested they said they were roadkill? How are humans transferring the virus to undomesticated deer?

One of my team was just up in Sudbury on business. Every hotel in the city was full due to hunting season. Need you ask more?

Ah of course. Duh!
On another note I heard domestic cats are spreading Covid to wildlife too. Cant find the article right now.

Are there game farms in Ontario? The American study was related to a State with game farms. Still do not understand how it gets to wild populations unless it is super transmissible in animals.

I heard of that from a different source this past week too. We're definitely not getting rid of it, it has gone into too many different species. Hopefully it will settle into something that won't cause serious health effects.

I was surprised too by it, as outdoor transmission doesn't appear to be all that high and how much close contact does one have with deer even with the game farms?

We had a call from a friend the other day. Our families have traditionally celebrated all the 'big' holidays together, usually with a gathering at our home for visiting & a feast. We're all missing each other a lot since pandemic arrived. They have 2 kids 14 & 11. Dad & 14 year old are dbl vaxxed. Mom has only 1 dose - I think she was quite sick after the first one & so hasn't gone back for second; I don't know if this was physician advice or just her own decision. 11 yr old is not vaxxed yet due to age. They're hoping we can get together for Xmas. We 4 are all dbl vaxxed. Said they would get COVID tests for mom & 11 yr old if we wished. Such a conundrum. Have to think on it for a bit & chat with our son & gf who will be here this weekend. Xmas is a long way off yet & numbers in Ontario are rising - uncertain what restrictions may be in effect by Xmas. What would you be inclined to do?

I would probably invite those fully vaxed but ask the others if they would be okay with standby status until covid stats come out with more confirmation of increased or decreased rates. As it stands right now, it looks like cases are starting to rise.

11 year old has no choice, so there's not much can be done about that, although it sounds like they might be able to get a first dose before Xmas. The Mom is a bit more problematic... I think I like waterfall's advice.

I'm going to go ahead and celebrate Christmas on Xmas Eve with my daughter at her place; my sister is also invited. We're all single, with varying degrees of smallish bubbles, and double-vaxxed, so I think it will be cool. I think it will be order-in Chinese and a Zoom with the kids on Xmas day.

Wait and see. Lately I feel like short term planning is the way to go, with very tentative long term rough plans.

I hope to spend some time at Christmas at my sister's place. I'm very aware it may just be outside, or may not happen at all.

By Christmas I wouldn't be surprised if kids with 1 dose are less likely to pass it on than adults who are 60+ who only have 2 and not 3.

In Ontario, it would be hard for anyone under 70 to have a 3rd shot, unless you got first and second early because of demographic. I am a "normal" 60-70, who moved her second shot up to as soon as I could and didn't get second until mid-late July.

I'm not really saying it as a blame thing, just pointing out potential risk possibilities. There's the whole is likely to pass it on part as well as the risk of someone getting sick - and how bad it would be. I think both of those, older people with 2 could easily be more of a problem than younger with 1 and that's not even taking into account decreasing immunity with time, and with that most of the older people will have had much longer since their last dose compared to kids under 12 if they don't have a 3rd.

Some European countries are even going back into partial lockdown, like the Netherlands, because of record new cases of Covid. Germany also has more cases per day than ever before, 50 000, but only goes as far as recommending to keep gatherings small and events are now all for vaccinated and recovered people only. However, it isn’t well controlled in many places and there is a big market for fake passes.

My sister just emailed she had a friend from Austria visiting last weekend, double vaxxed, tested before leaving the country- and now she got the message the friend was tested positive on return.
Thankfully, my sister had already her booster shot and so far, a bit of sniffles but tested negative.

There is I won't meet with you on principle (which I would have a tough time with where anyone is just skipping it without a really good reason, feeling a little sick for a day or 2 the first time isn't a good reason to skip dose 2 IMO).

Then there is we need to look at everyone in our group and figure out if the possibility of someone getting really sick is too high.

Agreed. So 50s, 60s and 30s, all double vaxxed, seems like low risk.
Coupled with low exposure....so jobs, staying away from crowds, etc...
Damn Covid anyway....you'd have to trust people enough to do their own self assessment when the numbers start to climb.
