Novel Coronavirus

Remember China? The country with over a billion people?
After a strict lockdown of 76 days they are a success story with only 90,604 cases and 4,739 deaths. They have not been in any lockdown since March.
Now compare that to less populated countries like the USA with 12.3 million Covid cases as of today and 257,000 deaths. Or the much smaller UK with 1.51 million cases and 55,024 deaths.
Canada today has 331,000 cases and 11,455 deaths.
And then there's Sweden, the country that everyone was watching when they ignored lockdowns. How are they today....lockdown because herd immunity didn't work. 208,000 cases and 6,406 deaths later.....still most don't wear masks.
So Chinas' "Draconian" measures for 76 days or years of revisiting Covid 19, it's our choice. Suck it up, or continue to watch people die.
And let's not forget, they did it without a vaccine!!!

Switzerland has only 20 % of their ICU beds available. A health economist has suggested that instead of the physicians deciding who of the patients would get the bed- and often the older patient would be excluded- persons who had been given a fine for intentionally ignoring the mask and hygiene rules should feel the consequences of their behaviour and be second in line.

Switzerland needs to give it's head a shake and think of a better solution......they are complicit by allowing it IMO.

Well it looks like I spoke too soon about China.....this is where they are at today:

Yeah, they have pretty good control, but far from perfect. However, this is part of their successful strategy. Basically if you have a flare-up, you test everyone and quarantine (not self-isolate, actual quarantine) anyone who is positive. South Korea uses a similar approach IIRC.

Have to admire the dedication they have to work together with such a large population. We are a "me" society and they seem to be a "we" society.

I think they are a do what you are told or else society. No thanks
For a shorter time to stop Covid, I would be willing to accept their solution. Here people seem to project an authoritarian society when drastic measures are needed.
It's Covid that has the potential to take our freedom away not necessarily the gov't.
I still remember people fighting seatbelts when they became mandatory....of course there were those who didn't want to be told what to do.....,
But I have to ask, "wouldn't getting into a serious accident without a seatbelt compromise your freedom more than the seatbelt?

No, I think Waterfall has it right. South Korea is a democracy and has handled the crisis in much the same away. Ditto Taiwan. East Asian cultures value family and society over individuality. Breaking quarantine or disobeying masking laws would be seen as endangering society which would dishonour not just yourself, but your family, so they are willing to accept measures that our cult of individuality will not.

No, I don't think so, Lastpointe. I heard a Korean minister describe the difference in a lecture series (almost certainly one of the "Living the Questions" series). She described their culture in terms of foundational language. She would not describe the man she's married to as "her husband", but "our husband", not "my house" but "our house". Koreans, anyway, are much more likely to use a collective noun that an individual one. Does language cause this shift to the collective? Or is this more collective attitude a driver in language development?

I think we've stopped making plans. Our planning ability has been thwarted since Feb 2019 when I was diagnosed. I am quite comfortable hanging out at home, and can socialize outside on walks or at the park. A few of us were getting together once a week to craft. We've put that on hold for now. Who knows what Christmas will bring. That's a way down the road. Kind of.

I was hearing the news today and it sounded like this will continue for another year. That made me think that we might have another summer where we can't go back to Ontario. That made me sad. Still, one day at a time. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.

My comments were regarding the China is doing it right comments I comment #5721. That they were doing well. Corrected to not so well in a later post

i would not trade our society for China, pandemic or not. Or are we already forgetting Hong Kong? and our two Michaels ?

This is a real disappointment.
Actually my daughter in law just told me that and commented that that is about time and hopefully NS will do the same with NB. She is 23 and works in a group home. We knew this was coming after having had the freedom over the the summer. I am glad we don’t wait until the numbers are as high as out west. Just got two bags of shavings and one bale of hay for the piggies, last trip to Costco in the city was last week, ready to reduce shopping to once a week and stay the blazes home. We are fortunate we can zoom, facetime and use a phone. We knew this year will suck, so we are in sucking phase #2.
PEI didn’t have a new case for a number of days, they are lucky they can just pull up the bridge.

Well i much prefer the no vaccine approach myself when all of the vaccines now coming out have not been given enough time for evaluation due to the urgency.
The reason we do have such high standards is because of another epidemic....polio. It was referred to as the Cutter incident. Children were actually given polio vaccines created by one pharmiceutical company that failed in the prosess of inactivating a live virus which led to 40,000 children getting polio and 10 died.

That's a problem with their government, not their culture or society. Chinese deference to society is cultural, not political, and long predates communism. It does explain why there is no mass movement to oust the CPC, though. As long as they maintain the "mandate of heaven" (that is, keep things safe and orderly for the most part), they are going to enjoy support. If things go South, expect all hell to break loose, though.

You are prepared at least. It sucks the numbers have risen the way they have. Fredericton has had anti-mask demonstrations, as I'm sure Moncton has.

I thought this was an interesting article in the Star today - different approach suggested ... Pandemic lessons on human nature from a math teacher
I think the issue with a lot of that is the way people are connected. The vitamin D aspect wasn't being done, but otherwise a fair bit was. We were encourage to look after each other. There were mental health texts one could sign up for. The rec centers did put up free exercise sessions. Positive stories are shared in the updates.

I think a big part of the problem is when some things are eased, people will naturally ease on other things. School was a huge aspect, and it's something I can really understand from many parents. If a kid can be in a class with 27 other students it becomes what's wrong with going over to X's house, our kids are in the same class anyway, etc. I heard a lot about it with Halloween and complaints of houses not handing out, trick or treating is way safer than school is what many people said. They would also totally ignore the fact that many households are out of the school group cohorts.
