None? I'm not sure that's correct, but the number, if not zero, is obviously very small. Okay, followup question: Name an organization for atheists that does not accept homosexuality as natural and not in need of curing.

Maybe there is not an organization "for atheists", but there are atheist homophobes. It's getting better among younger people.

That's true, Chansen and Rita. True. But then, there are prejudiced and non-prejudiced among both groups (there are informed and progressive Christians). The difference is that atheist groups don't teach that prejudice as part of their belief system. Homophobic and transphobic people cannot cover up their homophobia and transphobia with a belief system in atheist groups the way they can in religious groups. If they have a prejudice they have to answer for it for themselves.

well said Kimmo .... we should all answer for our prejudice ourselves .......
It would seem that the atheists have taken the moral leadership role in this regard :)

That's not the point. The point is that most religious belief system TEACH that there is something wrong or unacceptable about homosexuality and transexuality. Atheism has no book, but when you're not guided by ancient myths, you have to look for other sources of information and wisdom. Sure, you can derive some wisdom from the bible, but you're also free to reject other parts of the bible as crap, without having to awkwardly explain them or conclude they are metaphors, even though you can't defend that conclusion.

And so, if Christianity clearly does not lead the way in acceptance of others, but holds us back while groups of non-believers take the lead in tolerance and acceptance, then to quote Stephen Fry, "What the hell is it for?!?"

It is for people who believe and have experienced that there is something beyond our present understanding of reality - another dimension to it - for one thing. Possibly, that our five senses cannot know for certain, can't prove, because they are limited to our human vantage point (and we only actually use a small part of our brains as of yet - yet that small part can have a huge ego making us think we already know it all. That 10% tends not to be humble) but there is an intuition that they have faith in. It is for community and social cohesion, for another. And it provides hope to people, when the hard facts are bleak, for another. It does not have to conflict with what science teaches us. Things do not have to be black and white absolutes. And hard facts do not always point to wisdom. Nor do they point to art. However, we can evolve beyond using religion as a weapon or an excuse, I believe, and see it as sound guidance for those who just happen to think in a different way, see through a different lens, than those who can only appreciate the hard facts.

chansen .... I love the way you cut to the bone of a problem :)
"Christianity" ... the religions thereof .... are obviously not there to take the primary lead in exploring knowledge, promoting tolerance or acceptance.... although I will point out that a number are changing in that regard.....
Nor is the religion of christianity a leader in moral matters .....
"What the hell is it for?!" ...... excellent and most necessary question ......
I am looking for that answer too ..... not saying there is not one ..... actually looking.....
Sincerely
Rita

Sounds like a trick question, because I'm sure there are many individual atheists that don't accept homosexuality as natural just as many within a Christian denomination that accept homosexuality as natural may have members that don't.
