It is for people who believe and have experienced that there is something beyond our present understanding of reality - another dimension to it - for one thing. Possibly, that our five senses cannot know for certain, can't prove, because they are limited to our human vantage point (and we only actually use a small part of our brains as of yet - yet that small part can have a huge ego making us think we already know it all. That 10% tends not to be humble) but there is an intuition that they have faith in. It is for community and social cohesion, for another. And it provides hope to people, when the hard facts are bleak, for another. It does not have to conflict with what science teaches us. Things do not have to be black and white absolutes. And hard facts do not always point to wisdom. Nor do they point to art. However, we can evolve beyond using religion as a weapon or an excuse, I believe, and see it as sound guidance for those who just happen to think in a different way, see through a different lens, than those who can only appreciate the hard facts.
