There were a number of films coming this year that I was excited to go and see - Jurassic World - Rebirth, F4, and Snow White among them. Now, however, I won't be seeing any American movies for the next four years. Thankfully, I live in a country that makes its own great films

I consider the opening scene in "Saving Private Ryan" the best special effects sequence ever put on the big screen--the American landing on Omaha Beach.
on D-Day.
OMG, is that ever harrowing. One of the best war scenes I've ever watched.

IMO, the best sci-fi movie ever is still Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, "2OO1: A Space Odyssey," this despite the fact that it predates modern GGI development.
In terms of the look and feel, it's fantastic and I like the underlying ideas. It plods in terms of story development and the characters other than HAL are bland as all hell.

The Quiet Earth, the one I cited, is a little-known gem from Down Under (NZ, I think) about a small group who survive the apparent end of the world. Basically everyone but people on the brink of death disappears. It has an ending every bit as engimatic as 2001's. Of course, there's the possibility that rather than them being the survivors of a catastrophe, the whole thing is an NDE or afterlife. I should probably read the original novel someday to see if the author is any clearer on that point.

Snow White
Disney's whole "let's do 'live action' remakes" thing is stupid. I mean, the "live action" remakes of The Lion King and The Jungle Book ended up being almost as animated as the animated versions, just with 3D CGI instead of 2D hand-drawn cells. Maybe if they were putting a new spin on the stories or characters, there might be a point to it, esp. with one as old as Snow White, but that does not seem to be what they are doing.

I saw the movie on a giant screen with sensaround with a couple of Vietnam vets. The opening scene was so powerful that one of them had to temporarily leave the auditorium due to the painful war memories it evoked.

Thanks, I'll look for "Quiet Earth."

Can there be a quiet earth given the dissonance caused by those determined to win? That's modern Christianity ... overcome reality!

Farce and far side overwhelm ...

Hmmm some favourites are :

""Water" directed by Deepa Mehta

"The Life of Pi" both visually outstanding and thought provoking.

"First They Killed My Father" directed by Angelina Jolie in honour of her one son...

So many I have to think more.
I'm a fan of old movies too but my list would go on and on.

I just finished a story by John Grisham that parallels Three Days of the Condor ... I wonder how it could enter the theatre ... it is like a story within a myth, within a tale and the tale shimmers ... telos?

What's your favorite movie?
Waking Life. Star Wars.

What movie have you seen recently? What's your review of it?
John Wick 4. So painful to watch I had to leave. Life is too short.
What movies that are currently playing are you wanting to see?
Nothing really. Lots of old stuff I have yet to see.
This is the GoldenAge of Content :3
What upcoming movies are you most looking forward to?
Again, I am satisfied with what has alreadt been made. Like The Greatest Story Every Told. The 10 Commandmnets. Eraserhead. Liquid Sky
Let's talk about movies

@Carolla - moved this here from the thread on "Jesus Christ Superstar".

I love your enthusiasm for the movie "Wicked" and the values it promotes.

It sounds like it has a lot to offer in terms of positive messages and insights. I believe that we can find meaningful lessons in many different places, including pop culture.

I used to use one or two pop culture references in every sermon that I wrote, though I've become aware that the people in my congregation don't really know American pop culture. I really must become more aware of Korean movies and TV.

Any way, the reason I've avoided "Wicked" is the premise. In the movie "The Wizard of Oz" from the 30's, all of Oz was a dream of Dorothy's. And dreams don't have back stories

I'm not sure how to understand this statement. It implies that no derivative fiction/video is acceptable. So no prequels to existing fiction? There are several very literary books (among them, The Great Sargasso Sea) associated with the original Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, offering a background or alt scenarios around Rochester's mad wife, Bertha.

Wyrd reason.

To my taste, there absolutely can be prequels to existing fiction. As an example, one of my favorite "Star Trek" series is "Enterprise". The difference in my mind is that all of "Star Trek" wasn't a dream of Kirk's

And in the original Wizard of Oz novel by L. Frank Baum, neither is that story. In fact, it was the first of a long running series of books set in Oz. Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked, the basis for the musical, is based on the books with some elements from the movie (e.g. Margaret Hamilton's portrayal of the Wicked Witch was an inspiration). So your argument does not really hold water.

Mendalla, why think of it as an argument

Can't someone believe somethjng without needing one of us to have them justify it?

It was a movie. Some people like it for some reasons. Some.people don't. And so forth.

And we all have to learn how to live together without needing anyone else to have our belief or whatnot

Life is soooo cool

It holds water for me, Mendalla. I haven't read the books, and I don't care to read them. So in my making my decision on what I will pay my money for me to go see, "Wicked" is a definite hard pass

There heis fixed on that one way pathology ...

In the mean time is the bible wicked? If you believe not I question whether you read it thoroughly! Therein is contained much screwing around with everything (God), plundering and running off with any resources the powerful can carry ... beneath that? Hypo ... thetic?

I know people that swear by the cursed thing even though they declare they haven't read it because they do not understand Middle English, Olde English or their 4 runners ... Latin, Cyrillic, Semitic, etc. ETc. is a large field or Wahl ... mass of word! Upstanding and light at the same time blinding ... because of the void of understanding ... it is real! Intelligence and wisdom is just an essence like Psyche and Sophy ... they separated from paranoia because God claimed that weapon ... ever since para mores ... discrete ... like meta phor ... a parallel ... sometimes allegory? The bloody other side ... forming the blood-brain barrier ... just because ... spooks are spotless ... except for the Ayes ... where the essence pours ... Λ huh ... capital ... of the lighter type ... creeps around in the darkness ... as stardust ...

If nothing else a grand myth for the dense to collect ... thus it is accrued ... sometimes in alien forms!

Did you all watch the Academy Awards? I'm over the moon happy that Wicked won only two very minor awards

Fantastic performance by Cynthia and Ariana, though. :giggle:(y)

I am becoming more and more of a fan of Ariana Grande all the time. Yes, her usual pop stuff is a bit meh musically but, damn, that voice.

There; that was piously rejected for reason of desire alone ... desires being mysterious ... the form in mid aer ... truth and consequence ignored! Strayed contingent ... like a quantum effect ... blip in the dark?
