Local film festival screened "Pride" tonight, based on a true story. Striking Welsh miners (Thatcher era) supported by London GL alliance. Very good story, and very, very funny in spots. If it shows up near you, I'd heartily recommend a watch.

Soundtrack by Queen. Easily the best part of the whole movie.

FLASH! Aaaahaaaa! Saviour of the universe!!

Funny thing is that the same thing happened with Highlander. Entertaining but rather cheesy cult film that has some amazing music by Queen on the soundtrack (which was released on the Queen album A Kind Of Magic rather than on an official soundtrack album). Princes of the Universe, A Kind of Magic, One Year of Love, and Who Wants to Live Forever all came from Highlander.

Watched awesome movie on DVD last night - a documentary, but not boring whatsoever, called "Searching for Sugar Man" (spoiler alert) about a man from Detroit -Jesus Rodriguez- who was supposed to be the next Bob Dylan in the early 70s, his records for some reason didn't sell despite his amazing talent - somehow his music got picked up in South Africa because someone brought over an album - bootlegged and he was a legend there that inspired anti-Apparteid among white South Africans and achieved gold record status - they had created myths surrounding his death. Meanwhile back in the USA he was very much alive - a humble wise-man, champion of the working poor, in the same ramshackled house working as a contruction labourer and had no idea he was famous. South Africa during Apparteid controlled outside culture so tightly he wouldn't have known. So...someone in SA decides to investigate this guy a bit...who this legend is...what his American life had been like...and he is lead to his daughter in Detroit. Next...he's off to Capetown to do a tour for packed stadiums! It was awesome!

And I guess because his albums were bootlegged he never got paid the whole time either.

Tried watching the 1980 Flash Gordon again (it`s on Netflix) but didn`t make it through. It`s a deliberately campy adaptation of the comic strip with seriously hammy performances from two veteran actors (Max Von Sydow and Topol) and rather wooden performances from everyone else. Fun, cheesy time-waster that I can enjoy in the right mood (I did enjoy seeing it in the theatre when it came out) but not much more.

Finished it tonight. It is, to be honest, better than I remembered. Still cheesy, still loaded with bad acting and cheap fx, but the story isn't bad and the finale is rousing, if cliched. It's entertaining and sometimes that's all I want from a movie. A remake with modern fx, a better script, and a good cast could probably work as a summer tentpole (and, yes, the story could easily be expanded into a trilogy or something since that's all the rage right now),.

Another Sundance movie --- Rudderless.

Some good toons, a couple of surprises. some sadness....
Not bad for a first movie.
A bi of swearing, a bit of pot, ...bu a good discussion movie..and like many independents helps us look a situations from a different angle.

What about Xmas movies. Here are a few of my favorites - Muppet Christmas Carol; The Santa Claus 3; Elf.

There were 2 classics from my childhood - Rudolf, and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town that I loved. I still love both, but there were quite a few years where Santa Claus didn't seem to be on tv, or I always missed it, so it's just that much more special.
Mickey's Christmas Carol is up there too.

Well... The first two that you mentioned aren't movies, but rather TV specials. Of them, my favorite was always A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Last night by accident, flipping through channels, I watched The Christmas Choir- 10 homeless men form a choir. I understand it is a true story. Carla from Cheers was the head of the homeless shelter .It was a movie that was easy watching.

I've seen that one before. My reaction - meh. Not bad, not great. Certainly not a favorite. It ranks about the same as One Magic Christmas.

I LOVE Nativity. Amongst many reasons is I find it neat that the actress playing Mary is the right age and pregnant in real life during the shooting. I saw that at the theater with my daughter when it came out so that was a nice experience. It's the one movie I try to catch every year.

It is always too early for me to think of Xmas movies. I unreservedly loathe them, pretty well every one. Even the ones that were sorta tolerable the first time around. Because there's NEVER an only-time 'round for a Xmas movie, and there's far too many of them.

I rarely wish to watch any movie twice, and holiday-themed movies are no exception to that rule. They also tend to be saccharinely emotional, which further offends.
