Moses, Elijah, and Jesus! Oh My!

Yes, we noted that, as well. But didn't get very far with it. The cloud, the voice, the tents/shelters proposed for "The Law" - Moses and "The Prophets" - Elijah. It's not an easy one.

And this week, the lectio divina leader was also the rev, and she's doing Baden Powell on Sunday, so she's off the hook for Transfiguration, LOL.

We even referred a bit to the accompanying exodus passage, and it didn't help much except to short up Matthew's connection to the Jewish community.

Still everything from the past is considered cloudy and there are some egos that develop ... nebulae again ...

It is all to technically unclear for the mortal state ... so we can claim we know nothing (simulates the 5th)!

Those that know are damned by the alternate ... all based on mystery and folk that swear by it in oaths! I remain unsure and floating ... alien drifter ... maybe time to evacuate the insane zone ... and thereabouts ... i.e. get out wit yah ...

Temporalism ... imagine all the words we don't know ... enough to generate a crank or crotch y personification ... divine?

Nestorians ... or nacht myth ... shady out there ...

We had both of the passages today.

The minister pointed out that when the disciples wanted to stay on the mountain top, they didn't even think to go and get the others to share the experience.

That's an interesting point. Seems kind of selfish but if you're in the presence of an incredible mystical moment, not sure going to get other people is one's first thought. And sometimes when people having weird experiences have done so, it was gone when they returned.

Very true. But I think it's worth considering that Jesus had his inner circle with him. And they wanted to keep the experience to themselves. The minister made a connection to themes of black history month. It was quite powerful

Now I am wondering if Peter, James and John were in a position of privilege. It puts a bit of a different twist on this story and maybe others, too.

Jesus certainly seems to have put them in one here.

Mystery religions, which are kind of analogous, often had levels of initiation with some having more knowledge of the mysteries than others. Perhaps Jesus was going for a similar structure. Forget if the Essenes, the closest thing to a mystery cult in Judaism, had such a structure but if they did and if he was Essene or influenced by them, then maybe that's the answer. An inner circle, then the close follower like the rest of the Twelve, then the rest of his followers. Which then sets up a leadership structure for when he is gone.

I have been thinking of Peter, James and John as a kind of executive committee. Maybe that's the wrong analogy. But Jesus always seems so egalitarian it's hard to see him promoting a level of more enlightened disciples.

I guess you could argue the twelve all have special privileges (powers?) other followers don't have. Makes it interesting to ponder how randomly they were selected in the first place.

So why do we think Jesus told them not to tell anyone? Was it because he wasn't ready to reveal his true nature to everyone? (This has always been my interpretation)

In the Sunday School today they talked about others not being able to understand. So I heard at coffee hour.

Going with the inner circle thing though, maybe Jesus was just trying to avoid jealousy from the other disciples.

Going with my mystery cult idea, the inner circles always had knowledge that was only given to those who achieved membership in the inner circle. And I imagine those outside knew they did, even if they did not have the specifics. Else there would have been no motivation for advancing through the levels.

Maybe. But it seems counter to much of Jesus's teaching. The first being last and so on. Becoming like a little child etc.

Like the Qumran Essenes, John the Baptist views his ministry as "a voice crying in the wilderness." The Qumran Essenes have chapters throughout Palestine. The Essene leadership Council (Yahad) consists of "12 laymen and 3 priests," one layman for each of the 12 tribes of Israel. The structure of Jesus' band of disciples (an inner circle of 3 and 12 disciples) is probably derived from this Essene model. Luke's list of the 12 substitutes "Judas of James" for "Thaddeus," probably because, like Judas Iscariot, one of these disciples leaves the group and needs to be replaced, perhaps due the hardships of a homeless lifestyle and family concerns.

Can bull -ism cause advance into the real world ... causing a break in the body-mind connection?

In the real world psyche activity is getting more difficult to find in the myth ... there many lose it and are gone like the winds ... a mere vapour! And they wonder; "can real people be like that" feedback signals go way back ... hard to get to from here unless you value the imagination ... an abstract! Practically unseen as a diabolical side to days as they rise ...

These go round too! Alas not appreciated by the flat out ... stuck in the lay out ... while the script evolves ...
