He turned boys into men or something like that, didn't he?she's doing Baden Powell on Sunday, so she's off the hook for Transfiguration, LOL.
We even referred a bit to the accompanying exodus passage, and it didn't help much except to short up Matthew's connection to the Jewish community.

That's an interesting point. Seems kind of selfish but if you're in the presence of an incredible mystical moment, not sure going to get other people is one's first thought. And sometimes when people having weird experiences have done so, it was gone when they returned. We had both of the passages today.
The minister pointed out that when the disciples wanted to stay on the mountain top, they didn't even think to go and get the others to share the experience.
Very true. But I think it's worth considering that Jesus had his inner circle with him. And they wanted to keep the experience to themselves. The minister made a connection to themes of black history month. It was quite powerfulThat's an interesting point. Jesus certainly seems to have put them in one here. Now I am wondering if Peter, James and John were in a position of privilege.
I have been thinking of Peter, James and John as a kind of executive committee. Maybe that's the wrong analogy. But Jesus always seems so egalitarian it's hard to see him promoting a level of more enlightened disciples.Jesus certainly seems to have put them in one here.
Mystery religions, which are kind of analogous, often had levels of initiation with some having more knowledge of the mysteries than others. Perhaps Jesus was going for a similar structure. Forget if the Essenes, the closest thing to a mystery cult in Judaism, had such a structure but if they did and if he was Essene or influenced by them, then maybe that's the answer. An inner circle, then the close follower like the rest of the Twelve, then the rest of his followers. Which then sets up a leadership structure for when he is gone.
Going with my mystery cult idea, the inner circles always had knowledge that was only given to those who achieved membership in the inner circle. And I imagine those outside knew they did, even if they did not have the specifics. Else there would have been no motivation for advancing through the levels.Going with the inner circle thing though, maybe Jesus was just trying to avoid jealousy from the other disciples.
Maybe. But it seems counter to much of Jesus's teaching. The first being last and so on. Becoming like a little child etc.Going with my mystery cult idea, the inner circles always had knowledge that was only given to those who achieved membership in the inner circle. Is this in the right thread? Looks more like it belongs in this week's BPoTW about Jesus' time in the wilderness?Imagine it all coming down to this at the core! A descent of a man into the desert to become half baked?
