Maple washing:
Taxpayers ought to be directly compensated for this. Fines just go straight back to the government when the company already gets government perks for things like “buy local” campaigns, which I just read about, and other grants. The fines pay for themselves but the consumers get nothing back for being duped. Somebody on Reddit mentioned how they label produce from possibly being from the US and/ or a couple of other countries, all arranged on the same shelf when most of it is from the US, so there’s no accountability for confusing or misleading shoppers whose conscientious choices would benefit from more clarity.
There was a time, probably back in the 90s, when people would’ve been a lot more upset about this. It would’ve been the Great Grocery Scandal. At least most people I was around at the time understood that we shouldn’t put corporate breaks before looking after people. But as neoliberal capitalism grew and a concern for a basic level of “socialistic” values and benefits to society shrunk, people became more apathetic about it, and some swung further over to to rejecting any socialism at all.
