John 8: 48
The Judeans replied, "Aren't we correct in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?"

My reading of this would be that Jesus was being insulted. Religiously speaking, he would not have been mistaken for a Samaritan. He went to the Jerusalem temple and he often referred to the Law and the Prophets.

The Samaritan temple was elsewhere and they only considered the Torah to be scripture.

57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Jesus also slipped away when he was rejected at Nazareth (Luke 4.) The people wanted to throw him off a cliff but he slipped through the crowd.

@jimkenney12 The question becomes then, how applicable are these ideas to our life and culture today?
What applies is the principle behind the saying. Be ready to let go of anything you have if that serves the well being of the community or the mission you have accepted serving. Do this thoughtfully.

I provided a message for consideration for last summer to St. Andrew's United Church in Rockland which was posted under worship on their website. I attended a workshop today on invitational ministry that included the three regional councils served by Eric. During the workshop, reference was made to church websites so I checked that website and found my message. The theme song for that message could be Let it Go though it was about how far we are ready to go for what we believe. If Mystic would take some time to read it, I would like his response. I believe I shared that message on WC2 but not sure. He and I share many of the same goals and concerns, but with different attitudes and experiences. The website needs considerable work, but other tasks got on the way.

When we take time to understand the setting in which these statements were made, we have some guidance for examining our cultural context to create helpful guides to use today.

The workshop was one of the best I have attended and we will be getting copies of the powerpoints and other materials.

That's true, but the Samaritans claim the Pharisees and rabbis changed the laws to make Judaism easier, while the Samaritans kept the more stringent laws.
We do know that Jesus came to increase the law and did overturn those tables....might explain why he was hanging out in " the other temple" on Mt. Zion.
Anyway, I don't necessarily buy into it, but there are some interesting similarities.

Jesus also slipped away when he was rejected at Nazareth (Luke 4.) The people wanted to throw him off a cliff but he slipped through the crowd.
Maybe wondering why he was hanging out with the " other" Jews that didn't follow what they consider the original Torah? They claim the pharisees added to it and changed it.

If anyone would like to explore the Samaritans further, could we have a thread for this purpose?

They still exist in small numbers in present day Israel.
