Long Term Care

Does anyone know how much money PSW's make working for a home care agency? I understand the compensation is not great.

As occupational therapists, our earnings were similar to working in a hospital. I found community work (i.e. home visits) had a variety of pros and cons. But that's getting off topic.

In most cases, I just pay it. One company I work at does give me monthly free passes to ride on their shuttle busses, but I've never used them due to the times at which they travel
That explains the cost of the transportation. How is your travel time compensated?

Don't get paid for the time during which I'm traveling. I don't expect to be. Honestly, that concept seems a little strange to me. I don't know anyone who gets paid for their time traveling to work

No thanks. We are specifically talking about using public transit as a home care worker
.
Others might enjoy a more general discussion, of course.
Understood.

The thread was on Long Term Care, not PSW transit times, but, i get how things flow

No of course not. But traveling between clients all day is something else again.

@Jae are you acting as a PSW, or are you just talking general travel to and from your workplace?
Some large companies, and small companies do run transit, such as Google to their main facility or lower paying labourers to picking or plants.

Please see my answer to @paradox3 of about 46 minutes ago

Yeah, does he have a salaried job or is he billing independently as a consultant? Different kettle of fish.

Jae does ESL instruction in the workplace AFAIK.

ok, so not PSW. Just going to work, Very different from the reality of a PSW or other home care worker. (probably even more so for an OT caring equipment)

Before we got onto our tangent, I was trying to express that I understand the frustration of having family members who rely on visiting PSW's.

But I also know that those PSW's have many challenges in their work, transportation being one of them

The cancellation rate for home visits is high, too. (Unexpected hospitalizations and so on)

I am usually a very sympathetic person but my frustration has overtaken me. The PSW who came today left a note. That makes all the difference when people are sharing in her care. Mom is in pretty good shape physically and she is sweet. So she doesn’t present as being in need. But, I guess the real need is she can’t be left alone and that is hard for us sometimes. A church friend helps 2 days a week so that is great. And another visits once a week. We are doing a good job and only got the PSws because we were told that was the only way mom would be put on a list for long term care. So we outlined optimal times and jobs. So far that hasn’t been working.

We have had complaints that the family member who was scheduled for 8:00 a.m. visits wasn't available at 6:00 a.m.

One time I was with my dad when one of them came and asked us what she was supposed to do. My dad didn't know and neither did I.

Oh yes. Snow day cancellations.

There are many frustrations.

What does the agency say about the lack of communication? Leaving notes could infringe on your mother's right to confidentiality if neighbours/relatives come to visit. Do you know the policy of the agency as far as communicating with you or leaving notes?

I left a checklist with care items too so even checking off items would help. The notes are in a communication book…I can’t imagine others opening that to read it. Meanwhile my sister feels her privacy is infringed upon…so many people with access to a key and her home.
