The forecast calls for some snow, and freezing temperatures ahead. I am getting used to using my scooter everywhere (I love it) and will have to get around without it. I’m getting good at it...backwards too, and tight turns. It has an automatic slowing mechanism when I get going fast downhill. Sometimes, when the pavement is good and the path is clear all the way down, I want to let it rip!...but safety first..lol. I must be getting more comfortable with it. Mobility scooters are not built for speed for a reason. It has good tires (good treads) but I wouldn’t risk it, even for a few blocks outdoors on snow and ice. I have had out it in a couple of torrential downpours (which isn’t a good idea but I didn’t have a choice when it started dumping rain and I was already out and needed to get it home. I went through a deep puddle and was worried because it’s really not built for that and I don’t want it to corrode...so far it’s fine. I also got a flat tire in the front last week (one of two small tires close together). Must’ve gone over something sharp and not seen it. I could still drive it, but it felt like the steering was pulling to the right - like something was caught around a wheel. So, the next day - wasn’t sure if I could get it on the the bus - I drove it all the way to the scooter store to get it fixed, in the rain, clunk, clunk, clunk, all the way...not the best conditions...it took about an hour to get there ...but I felt really independent/ proud of myself, for managing that. Didn’t ask for help or have a meltdown. I just did it. Like my determined old self. It felt like a real accomplishment, as small as it might sound.

Oh dear Northwind. Sorry to hear about your sister's health difficulty and hoping her stroke doesn't leave her with major deficits. . May her medical gurus be well trained and perceptive and may you find the strength to support her.

Hey Kimmio - your little scooter seems to have given you a real boost. Your recent posts are so cheerful and positive. I'm wondering if your scooter store have any suggestions for handling the rain? Where I live, of course, the challenges would include snow.

We left the hospital around 10 last night. It looked like she was going to be spending the night in Emerg as the beds on the unit were full. She'll get physio and other services to help her recovery. She has weakness on her left side, not full out paralysis, so that is good. The not good is that she was at another hospital on Friday and yesterday morning. Her thyroid is out of whack, and that caused her heart to go crazy. That is what caused the stroke. She was told there was a stroke risk, but was not put on blood thinners. The people in emerg last night were surprised by that. She went to the other hospital yesterday morning and they did a head CT. The doctor last night said the stroke was visible on the morning CT. They could have done some treatment yesterday morning if they had been on the ball. Needless to say, we're not happy about that. She will be in the hospital for a few days and will get physio and other treatment. Of course, there was damage to the brain because it was not dealt with properly yesterday morning. Apparently though she will be in hospital for a few days and will get physio and other rehab. Needless to say, there will be no further visits to the smaller hospital.

Hugs...hopefully she gets better treatment now

I forgot to mention that the other hospital diagnosed her with Bells Palsy. When we got to her house yesterday, we knew that was not what it was. She had been texting me and also left me a phone message. I asked if they had given her any drugs at the hospital because she sounded a bit stoned. The rest is history.

OY! Thankfully you were there.

It really is sad and frustrating when patients do the right thing and the medical system doesn't. I'm thinking that she, or a family member, should be filing a formal complaint. Emergency depts. shouldn't be sending patients home without suitable medication supports. I lost a good friend because of the lack of care in an emergency dept. They kept her in Emerg for two days with a horrendous headache . Then they sent her home because the drugs they were giving her weren't helping. Not surprising really as she was having a brain bleed.

 Ugh with the medical care on that.
Sorry it is have such serious complications for her.

Advice, LAST people. I had been pretty committed that Luce and I would attend a "reactive dog" course starting in Feb. Bit expensive. $275 for 6 sessions. But she's awful, but she's also 9. She has no dog friends left, they all died, and life would be a lot easier if she could "be" in the world without wanting to "eat it".

But I've just dropped 4500 on the plumbing around here. Is dog training, esp of such an old dog, something I should go without?

Do you believe it will make a significant difference? From what you've told us about Lucy in the past and in this post, I'm thinking not but she's not my dog. If not, I wouldn't bother, not with a $4500 plumbing bill.

Any way you could find her more friends?

Wait...didn’t you say it was already known that she was at risk for a stroke? Why wouldn’t they look into that in the first place? Aren’t strokes more common than Bell’s Palsy (and don’t they rule out the common conditions first)? ...
