My son is choosing to spend the next four years in Ottawa and could easily have chosen Toronto. Why? Best biking trail network of any city. And that covers both sides of the border (Gatineau is part of the National Capital Region). Best skiing in Eastern Canada is close at hand (sorry, Blue Mountain doesn't cut it) in the Laurentians. Fact is, every city has something to commend it. You just have to find the one that fits your personality and interests.

And I'm sure that proximity to Quebec where the drinking age is 18 had nothing to do with Little M's decision. Nothing whatsoever. Really.

To each their own. Still, I can't help but feel that your son is losing out.

Props to him for choosing the university that would most allow him enjoy mountain biking.

It is also a fairly good program but, yeah, I think the environment probably played into his choice as much as the program. Getting away from us was a factor, too, I suspect (6-7 hours drive).

Enjoy your time in Ottawa and Montreal Graeme. Here are some good places to visit...

Course, why someone would want to spend a couple of weeks in Ottawa and Montreal when they could spend same amount of time in Canada's greatest city is beyond me.

There is much beyond you ... inclusive of God's wisdom ... entanglement with excess passions may be to blame for mental screws Jack ... thus the tacked mine'd with nowhere to wander in pilgrimage ... sometimes referred to as hajji by Aramaic ... it is sais Jesus spoke in that ...

Seriously, it's good to hear that he's in a good program. Do I feel just as good a program exists in one of Toronto's fine schools? I feel that yes, it probably does. The whole getting away thing is understandable. My middle son left us here in Toronto to do his years of college in Sault Ste Marie. It was fun visiting him there. We always stopped for footlong hotdogs. You may find you come to enjoy the 6-7 hour drives.

I loved Montreal when I lived there as a single person; less so the year we spent there with a young family. I have never lived in Toronto but visited often while living in Hamilton - I don't think I would want to live there - especially with the high cost of housing. Didn't like Hamilton but enjoyed the town of Stoney Creek when we lived there. I think it has changed since then.
Actually I think I'm a small city person. I didn't want to leave Stoney Creek to move back to NB - we had a cozy little home there, the kids liked their school, the church, doctor's office, schools, arena, swimming pool and parks were all within walking distance.
But I love living in Fredericton - so close to two universities, churches, playhouse, art gallery. Reasonably priced housing. And good people. And the river runs through it. Shopping not so good though.

Yes, Fredericton is beautiful. It's my hometown and, indeed, I began my university education at UNB.

Toronto housing is expensive, but certainly not the most expensive in Canada. The city features four public colleges, four public universities, plus seminaries, and private post-secondary schools and business colleges. There are a great number of churches of a great number of denominations and non-denominational ones too. You can attend anything from a traditional high Anglican church to an urban missional neighborhood church. We have a great number of theaters and art galleries. Amongst the latter is the AGO, one of the most distinguished of galleries in all North America. The people here are great, and Toronto is the most multicultural city in the world.
