My son is choosing to spend the next four years in Ottawa and could easily have chosen Toronto. Why? Best biking trail network of any city. And that covers both sides of the border (Gatineau is part of the National Capital Region). Best skiing in Eastern Canada is close at hand (sorry, Blue Mountain doesn't cut it) in the Laurentians. Fact is, every city has something to commend it. You just have to find the one that fits your personality and interests.
And I'm sure that proximity to Quebec where the drinking age is 18 had nothing to do with Little M's decision. Nothing whatsoever. Really.![]()
To each their own. Still, I can't help but feel that your son is losing out.
He did four hours of mountain biking in Gatineau yesterday afternoon. I think he's just fine where he is.
There are also the charms of Western Canada
Props to him for choosing the university that would most allow him enjoy mountain biking.![]()
Enjoy your time in Ottawa and Montreal Graeme. Here are some good places to visit...

Course, why someone would want to spend a couple of weeks in Ottawa and Montreal when they could spend same amount of time in Canada's greatest city is beyond me.
Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia are all beautiful.
It is also a fairly good program but, yeah, I think the environment probably played into his choice as much as the program.Getting away from us was a factor, too, I suspect (6-7 hours drive).
For one ignoring and denying my comments you seem folk US'd ...
Maybe I' yam your unknown god?
Ignoring? Denying? If you would write in proper English there might be less of that. At any rate, I'm now last.
I loved Montreal when I lived there as a single person; less so the year we spent there with a young family. I have never lived in Toronto but visited often while living in Hamilton - I don't think I would want to live there - especially with the high cost of housing. Didn't like Hamilton but enjoyed the town of Stoney Creek when we lived there. I think it has changed since then.
Actually I think I'm a small city person. I didn't want to leave Stoney Creek to move back to NB - we had a cozy little home there, the kids liked their school, the church, doctor's office, schools, arena, swimming pool and parks were all within walking distance.
But I love living in Fredericton - so close to two universities, churches, playhouse, art gallery. Reasonably priced housing. And good people. And the river runs through it. Shopping not so good though.
