Church study groups (bible study and other types) might make a good topic for a thread in Church Life.

In a congregation of 30 - 60 (depending on who you count) we were lucky to get 6 - 12 at a study session.

This is consistent with what I have seen in a few different congregations.

I have heard the argument from some that they don't want to talk about their faith, they want to live it out. I can respect this point of view but I still see both aspects of faith as very important.

Still need to discuss to a certain extent to live it - we discuss all other aspects of our lives as we live them, yet people don't want to discuss faith.

As I was told once, why sit around discussing what we believe when we all believe the same thing. When I pointed out that I didn't believe exactly the same thing as them, they shut down.
I have found that a lot of what passes for 'Bible Study' has very little in the way of 'study' going on. Often there's a 'study book' or leader who served as something like 'the Shell Answer Man' (anyone else care to admit to being old enough to remember this?) It seems to always become a feel-good, confirm-my-opinion fest.

I actually haven't attended many Bible Studies. Most interesting one was an ecumenical one hosted by another denomination in town almost 20 years ago - I was considered the "heathen" of the group whenever I dared mention that there was another way to look at the verses and everyone tried to "convert" me to the "Truth!"

Would people not wish to discuss faith because of:
  1. They would wish to talk about what they are trying to cover up
  2. They are the group of those fearing what's under the fabric hidden by #1 as a bete noire?
Oh the darkness of the night of the soul ... Machiavelli ... who says it as it isn't (just to confuse those that like cover-ups)!

When you get into the study of the human psyche it is bothersome its complexity and the opposition that says it is simple! They really think it is simple to know eternal things from the mortal stance as a statue ... hard-shelled and aL ah've ID?

Paper has been fired off to the Advocate for printing and uploaded to the website in anticipation of its release next week. I have the rest of the day to lounge around in LAST
