Is Ontario headed for another Wynne win?

I don't know, guys. The party's absolute keen-ness to completely bail on Brown, to push him out, sounds like a real harbinger of a female leader choice, especially when they've got two solid choices, versus a gently-used drug dealer.

Given that Elliott was a solid choice against both Hudak and Brown and lost to both? I'm not putting anything past this party.

Three choices:

Doug Ford. The "risky choice." Very much a loose cannon. Would be an outsider. Had a lot of support in the suburbs of Toronto (especially Etobicoke and Scarborough) when he ran for Mayor, but municipal politics is non-partisan and that throws a potential wrench into that equation. Can he win in the 905? Can he win in rural Ontario? How far can his very suburban Toronto-based populism take him? Don't know - which makes him risky for the PCs.

Christine Elliott. The "safe choice." Lots of experience, probably significant support in the caucus and in the wider party, probably making her the easiest to just slide into the driver's seat. Mind you, she has the millstone of having already lost the party leadership twice around her neck, and also the optics of having left politics to accept a patronage appointment from Kathleen Wynne, which will probably be thrown at her by Ford.

Caroline Mulroney: The "intriguing choice." Successful career as a businesswoman. Lots of name recognition. That can work both ways. Brian wasn't very popular when he left office, but personally I think he looks better as time goes by. She has lots of potential, I'd say - but little or no direct experience in politics. Already had a nomination under Patrick Brown's leadership, so she's not exactly like her dad who basically would only run if he was the leader.

I've been reflecting on how this might affect my vote. As I said above because I am very impressed with Laurie Scott - my PC MPP - I've been planning to vote PC. Since Scott is my reason, there's no one the Liberals or NDP could nominate that would change my vote based on the local candidate. Unless one of them takes some really unexpected policy position, I can't see that either Elliott or Mulroney lose change my vote. But I'm not sure I could stomach voting for a PC Party led by Ford, no matter how much I think Laurie Scott deserves to be re-elected. That outcome would likely lead me to the Greens, since I think it really is time for the Liberals to go, and the NDP under Horwath have never really impressed me - although with Ford as PC Leader I'd be open to being unexpectedly impressed by Horwath. Wynne would have to go a long way to impress me enough to get me to vote Liberal.

I'm talking Liberal, PC and NDP. No other party will win in Ontario (and in fact, the chances of another NDP government seem impossibly slim to me at present.) You are betting that a male leads the PC? I somehow don't think so, with both Elliot and Mulroney in the running.
Betting? I don't bet. I have an intuitive feeling that Ford will become the leader of the PC's.

As I said, I think there's been an essential change in the political climate in the last year. Now, if Drumpf gets a second term, I will be totally clucked.

Our elected representatives do not reflect the realities of the people ... that can change.
  • Armine proposes that every elected representative should be required to live for one month in the first year of their term in the poorest neighborhood of their riding or ward.
  • One unit of social housing could be kept available for that purpose. The place that the elect put their poor - one unit of that housing (like a rectory) - should be kept available for that purpose - or a hotel room - that is used by children's aid or shelter services.
  • The monthly budget of these people that we elect to represent all of us - not just some of us - for that month - would equal the low income measure. Half of the median after tax income of their riding adjusted for the size of their household.
  • Now they could not use a car without money. Transit food and other needs including medications would come out of this budget.
  • Difficult daily choices are guaranteed. After a few years all of the politicians would know how the other half lives. Nothing would better focus the mind on the challenges faced by their least advantaged citizens.

Doug Ford will be the next leader of the Ontario PCs. I can feel it in my gut.

Not impossible. It will depend on whether or not the ONPC's put in regulations limiting new memberships. If memory serves it was the selling of party memberships that put Brown in the Leaders seat last go round. Ford Nation could probably cough up enough memberships to significantly tip a leadership race in Doug's favour.

With the declaration by Mulroney that she will challenge for the leadership position I think that Ford will be in tight. Not all of Ontario remembers her Father's run as Prime Minister fondly so that could be trouble in some ridings outside of the 416/905. Ford as party leader will also not play well outside of the GTA. For many, he is the less affable but equally buffoonish brother to Rob.

Be prepared for Ford, should he win the leadership, to have to revisit the Griffin Centre fiasco repeatedly.

Fords cross the pool ... in case anyone feels crossed ... you probably are in the minor powers list ... I.E. the small #'s that control everything ... as Graeme Decarie has indicated many times over ... redundancy is required regarding polity ...

Thus Canons that come off the wall ... incomplete?

Starting to feel the effects of raising the minimum wage yet?

Way back in 70’s and 80’s whenever I visited the Okanagan, we’d go fishing and catch a bunch of Kokanee. At some point some scientists had the bright idea to introduce fresh water shrimp to feed the Kokanee. But the shrimp ate all the smaller organisms upsetting the natural balance of the ecosystem, pretty much wiping out the Kokanee and having the opposite effect to what was desired.

A free market system works the same way. Introduce artificially high wage - kill a bunch of fish.

And you get less help and longer lineups and pay more for it.

Well, why not start with your own job......lower your own commission based on a selling price to a flat rate of $11.25 and hour and reduce your own inflated pay scale.

It’s not inflated. I get paid for what I produce.

Carpenters and electricians make more money that the labourer who sweeps up after them. Why? Because you could hire 1000 broom pushers and never get a house built. They are there to do unskilled labour so that you are not wasting your money paying the tradesperson big bucks doing mindless work.

Why not just slaughter all the little people instead of starving them to death in good Christian movements towards success for the corrupt (powerful BS)? It seems to work according to my looking into the church systems over the past 2000 years or more ... and some worry over Date and time trivia ... it passes ...

And architects are required for the house to be built.....we are all in this together.

Ya, there sure are a lot of Canadians starving to death.

I don’t get your point. Architects are paid for what they produce too.

If you have three employees doing the same task and one produces $100, one produces $50, and one produces $10 in income for your business - does it make sense to pay them all $15?
