But we have contemporary images from which to model statues. They existed, and we have ample evidence. We don't have that evidence for Jesus, so everyone depicts him as they want him to look.That's hardly a factor. Look how many Roman and Greek statues there are of mythological figures or semi-legendary figures. Even the busts we have of Homer owe more to traditions about him than any reality. And his existence is open to question as well given the nature of the texts (recorded oral traditions) attributed to him. Statues of Jesus appear once he becomes important. That's what matters more than his reality or lack thereof.
