Archive-It - United Church of Canada sites - UCCan
Forums | WonderCafe - Chansen's

So the old site itself doesn't exist anymore, but portions have been saved.
Thanks Inanna, I never thought I would see it again.
Mine is way faster, but only goes back a couple of years.

You can search it by putting this in your search bar:

Code:
search_text_here site:wondercafe.altervista.org/www.wondercafe.ca/

I really should reply to the takedown order I got from the United Church about...2 years ago.

What was their issue with it?

Copyright. I just don't care. And I haven't monetized it. They can pound sand.

Please remove all pages and cease using this name. It is the property of The United Church of Canada, and is being used without permission. Additionally, the content and images on this site is the property of the United Church, copied from a now offline website.

If anyone is feeling upset I hope they will let us know.

On the other hand, if anyone is worried that Namaste might be lurking (who knows, right?) please reach out via Conversations to someone you trust.

Lastpointe, I am sure no one was overly upset and I think is has been kind of fun rehashing the past.

I was a newbie too and learned so much about on line conversations. But one thing I haven't learned is how

to quote. hahahahaha

What's the difference between what you did and google cache plus all the other things out there that exist other than timeframe?

No idea, and like I say, I really just don't care what their incompetent webmaster wants. They never escalated it with the (free) web host, or if they did, Altervista ignored them or told them to get stuffed. If they got it down, it would just go up somewhere else. And if I replied to the request, they wouldn't like the reply, so I just ignore it.

I'm just at a loss as to their issue. Neither of the archives got all the forum discussions. Also, we were told that at least all the keywords from the titles would show up and it's not true. On occasion I want something from the old site and yours is much better if it covers the part I'm looking for.
So confused why they would complain about you providing us a service that they didn't fully provide, from something that was on the internet anyway.

If you were actually using the site information somehow, I would get it. But it's just an archive, similar to what they have partially done.

Want to know the real reason I did it, and why I didn't try harder to get more of the site than just two or three years?

I wanted the threads about Carter to be available. Some day, I hope I'm in a place where I can read them.

The download stalled at about 3GB. I tried again and it stopped about the same time. But I got the threads I wanted. The rest was gravy.

Wow. That's actually really beautiful. Really. I hope someday you can read them too.

I think almost everyone here can understand that.
Some of the stuff I have looked for has simply been to help me fill in timelines with illness crap. There was some really helpful stuff people said to me though, which is still useful as those low times in our lives tends to popup many times, perhaps sometimes in different ways. My loss wasn't as deep, so I could at least process what was said to me, although event that often wasn't as it was being said.

I think I put together some PDFs for CH before the site went kaput. Nothing like you did as at that time it wasn't something I could have learned quickly.

I think quite a few of us benefit from having access to some of the old info when we feel the need for it.

I thought someone would have figured out my motivation by now. I mean, if I was desperate to archive the whole site, you have to figure I would have. I used HTTrack and set it to run overnight, and while it seemed to be working well, the download just stopped sometime before morning. Twice. Checked that I at least had what I wanted and gave up.

I'm sorry. I should have tried harder.

Downloading an entire site like that is large and unwieldy. A site like that really isn't that big in terms of information, when all the text is stored in a database. But when you're saving individual pages, it balloons.

I feel like trying harder could have definitely happened - it's just not you that I expected that from.

At least you got quite a bit accessible for all of us.

No need to apologize for that.

The United Church was responsible for the United Future website. We're lucky Wondercafe was usable at all. Asking their web people to archive the site would be risking an electrical fire.

I'm going to do defense for a moment of the UCCan IT group.

I have watched so many projects get wrapped up in the controls within corporate IT.
The rules are there for a reason; however, they often push projects into hell.
I've been there, and sometimes, they are not recoverable.

It is easy to be on the outside, without rules, doing what one wants...that is how wondercafe2 stood up. that is how the archives were built.
It is why hackers are so successful, and fighting them is tough.
