How was church today?

Back to the OP question "how was church today" (kinda) - I discovered that my skill in setting my alarm clock has been compromised by lack of practice in retirement. I wanted to go the music filled service this morning - but woke up 15 min before it started! Apparently my alarm was on the PM not the AM mode. So no church for me. I will read & watch something online later ...

Minister preached about being ourselves ... perhaps at a hint at the evolution and process of digging through the shell into what's in nere ...

Thus that old adage about knowing one'self ... and one has to back off a bit and look into whatever that beast is ... animation? If God is eternally large is that monstrous or beastly?

Perhaps part of the code to hide wisdom about the old wise one ... cause real people didn't wish to know! It is demanded by word of God supposed to be subscribed by men of script!

Is that subtle?

Last week we had a baptism, today another one and next week we'll have the patronal festival and another baptism. It's a nice feeling to see young parents seeking the church for them and their babies. The thing I'm struggling is all the hymns, which I mostly don't know. Music used to be a joyful part of the service for me.

Is the main problem that you don't know the tunes - or that the tunes are dreary? Could you do something/anything to liven up the music offerings? Maybe teach the choir a few livelier tunes at their regular practise - or teach some to the Sunday School kids and have them 'share'?

Both things, actually LOL

They just sing hymns from the joint hymnary of the UCC and ACoC, the red one. And the ones that were composed for organ. Like 18th century English stuff. I like it, but it's getting boring and heavy. I don't know if you can see what I mean. I also miss singing in Portuguese. I'm considering to attend services in another church once a month where I could get more familiar music, if that's possible.

We call that Red book the "old" hymnal. The UCC now has "Voices United" also red and a soft cover "More Voices" songbook.

So apparently I am NOT doing the service on Sunday. The older gal who arranges pulpit supply (and readers etc) says she didn't know I was doing the service. My recollection (and the ministers) was that she was right there at the time. So I am annoyed and grumpy., I would have used yesterday differently.
Now I can book another night and stay for full presbytery. Good but requires another hotel stay.
I have been offered any other week I want by the minister-or to do a joint service with him.
I already felt it was getting late to do General Council stuff.

I attended a United Church here and I loved the songs from More Voices, such as Called by Earth and Sky and God of the Bible. Considering going back there once in a while.

Oh my - that hymn book was a project from 1971!Coming up on 50 years ago. There have been two more 'modern' hymn books in the UC Can since then - you would probably enjoy some of the music from "More Voices" which is the most recent - more lively & with more current language & concepts. (ah - typed this & then your post & Tabitha's just above popped up!)

well our minister has been working long hours and M and P are encouraging a week off-and I said "Just book one-including Sunday-I have the service done- we will talk dates tomorrow and tell the scheduler in writing. It is a hassle but not insurmountable-I had planned my service to also tie in a bit to the work we were doing on where does the congregation go from here.

That said I am still feeling a bit fragile.

Today we visited a downtown church. The minister was away and a retired minister lead the service. I appreciated his wisdom as he spoke about the importance of worship. He gave me something to think about. At coffee time we had music from some youth in the congregation. It was nice. Also, as we were approaching the church, we were treated to music from the bell tower. We haven't heard that for a long time.

Received news before the Service on Sunday that the daughter of one of the Minister's I had a hand in training so many years ago was killed in an accident on the Trans Canada Highway a few days earlier. I spent Sunday afternoon at the funeral home expressing condolences and sitting nearby while he wrestled with an unexpressible grief.

Some islands suck.

Bell ... the tolers ...

Draws men in ... like an apple in the tree ... "Johnny if you fall out of that tree I'll kill you!"

Thus the logical fallacy!

A half-off-topic question:
Do United Church congregations usually celebrate Reformation Sunday?
