How do we know what is true?

There are lots of small pharmaceutical companies too.
It isn't all tied to big pharma and big money. Where do you think that money goes from cancer runs and the diabetes campaigns? A fair bit goes to universities - grants that supervisors can use for research materials, instrumentation, paying a post doc, stipends for grad students, etc.
That's good. But is that the dominant case?

I was kidding, bb. I get that. By law, in the US corporations are persons under the law. That has implications for multinationals not in a person's favour if they ever try to sue one.

the statement was this: "Big pharma is not likely to fund a study about how to treat disease with garden plants that people can grow for free, are they?"

big pharma will not fund something with NO or LIMITED possibility of profits , that is 100% true

If you can take that garden plant, and develop a patentable process to extract or modify the contents of that plant into a drug, they will work to develop the drug if a business case can be made for it. Hey, if you're good enough, maybe you could grow it and produce the ingredient for your own use. You just couldn't sell it legally.

That's why I said Kimmio was 50% correct. They aren't stopping you from growing plants and producing it. They're stopping you from selling it.

Again, you don't understand the business side of it. I'm not an expert, but I get the gist of it. I've been around drug and testing development. I was heavily invested in drug development just last year. The motivation for drug companies is the development of proprietary knowledge and compounds that they can keep away from generic manufacturers for years by way of patents. It's about patents and the prevention of competition.

No patents? Say goodbye to a lot of very good drugs.

Don't like the system? A lot of people don't, myself included. Propose something better. Ideally something that still gets drugs developed. Not easy, is it?

Nobody's stopping people from selling common plants and flowers as far as I know. Only some plants, like pot. Nurseries do quite well.

This is pointless. You don't have a f***ing clue what you're talking about, you make s**t up, and you lie about what I'm posting.

The problem is without anyone funding a big study that makes it into a peer reviewed medical journal only the holistic types will take it seriously - we're expected to take doctors and pharma seriously when it's kind of a rigged game, isn't it? They have cures. So do naturopaths but they can't compete, unless they join.. Profits win the day.

yep and you will never ever hear about the plant again

Yep, and lives and quality of lives are saved in the process.

Don't like it? Stop complaining and propose something better. Think the homeopaths have answers that aren't being taken seriously? They've been studied. They have nothing. Think naturopaths have something? Start a fundraising campaign among the sufferers. Get a university or hospital to study it. Help fund them.

That's how it works. That's what some very good people are doing for child brain repair.

Conspiracy theory. One that assumes companies don't want to profit, but instead withhold potentially life saving solutions, because....?

Also, it assumes the scientists who developed the drug that has been placed under wraps wouldn't leak this information to the press or take it to a competitor.

Good luck with that idea. It's not a winner.

Oh, I don't know @chansen. Monsanto patented seeds, to take over small farmers. And if their seeds cross pollinate with organic seeds on a farm nearby, they own what's grown with those too. That's just evil. Everyone needs to eat. So bb is not being far fetched in suggesting drug companies could do the same.

Big business can be really cut throat and nasty and I am not going to assume that their aims are altruistic most of the time. Okay, they come up with a lot that helps but unless the natural producers join their game the way they play it, they're going to look weaker, less credible - they may have equally good treatments. They may have cheaper, more natural easy to come by in nature, solutions. But that would be a game changer and they don't want that - too many other things attached to that game change.

i didn't say any of the above you assume to much ,

of course there are much needed drugs, there are also much pushed drugs, but the underling equation for all drugs good and bad
PROFITS

and that my friend , like it or not is the motivating factor and why some drugs that should not see the light of day in a drug store makes it !

duhaaaaa

There is a crapload of reasons to criticize pharmaceutical companies. Do they withhold stuff? Yeah. Bad results. They stockpile drugs and crate artificial shortages. They can be absolute bastards.

You don't need to make up reasons to hate them.

Again, this is a case of conspiracy theories which do not address the real problems, but instead simply play on the fears of the ignorant.

OHH NOOOOO,,,, don't bring Monsanto into this you'll be called a conspiracy nut

bulls**t, totally bulls**t

without watchdogs errr conspiracy nuts, since big pharma funds alot of political agendas they will have an even bigger door to push some of there crap

From that, I read that you think that any plant extract that can be turned into a patentable drug will never be heard about again.

You have a history of championing boneheaded conspiracy theories. Forgive me for assuming this was another one.

If that's not what you meant, you still haven't effectively communicated what you did mean.

Yep, and it's also why good drugs get developed.

Again, how would you change the system? Who have you read who has a more workable plan? Are you just here to complain, or do you have an answer? Because I don't like it either, but I don't have an answer, and I don't pretend to have one.

you do relise that things take a turn when people speak up right and things get EXPOSED

Conspiracy theorists such as yourself have zero positive effect. You're a distraction, because your fears are rooted in ignorance and stupidity. I list off a bunch of things to actually be concerned about, and you ignore them. If anything, big pharma loves you. You make it look like their opponents are crazy and stupid.

You are not watchdogs. You're a sideshow. And you're not helping.
