And then there is the narrow path or the eye of the needle.

Full agreement on the narrow path. There is only one way to enter the reality of God's spiritual being at the heart of human being. This is the way of faith. Faith that what Jesus says and does offers light by which darkness is displaced. Jesus as exemplar and guide. This faith is not obtained by merit but by grace. It is a gift. A gift I have received in the company of many in all times and places.

My faith is not in the Christian religion. It rooted deep and secure in the living presence of God at the heart of my being in the world. It is nourished by the gospels, the epistles and the other writings of Old and New Testaments. Saying this I am well aware of the diverse Christian perspectives which will find me to fall short of their standard for inclusion in the grace of God.

I suspect a primary difference between our perspectives on Jesus has to do with the manner in which we read and interpret. At the age of thirty I turned away from the priestly perspective to engage the prophetic perspective. Which means that blood atonement is not at the centre of my concern. With Isaiah, Amos and others, I am not much impressed with the rituals and doctrines of temple religion. My concern, which I take to be the concern of God, is with the seeking of justice. Not as an abstract concept. As the determination to see that all will be included in the gracious goodness of God made available in the person of Jesus and the apostolic community by which the Holy Spirit animating Jesus is communicated in the day and on through history until our day.

My primary quarrel is not with God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. My quarrel is with those who take these and exploit them to fund temple economies. This quarrel is rooted in narrative history of ancient Israel and the good news about Jesus as liberator from the exploitive and oppressive structures of sin endorsed by temple religion. Something we are now witnessing in the earth. With Jesus, I invite persons to a reconsideration of the precepts and practices by which the earth and its peoples are being destroyed. A turning away (repentance) from one way of being in the world to embrace the way of God. Forsaking the knowledge of good and evil to eat of the tree of life at the heart of God's creation.

Matthew presents a picture of the day in which God separates the righteous (sheep) from the unrighteous (goats). There is no mention of doctrine or belief. The standard is love which freely includes the lost and the broken of our world. A standard rejected by those who make use of the name of God to enrich themselves at the expense of others. This is in plain view with the many entrepreneurial evangelicals who sell the blood of Jesus to fund temple economies and enrich themselves.

Buddhism has an interesting image about the Buddha and enlightenment: the Buddha is like a finger pointing at the moon. The Buddha is the finger, enlightenment is the moon. Focussing on the finger means you miss the real truth of the moon. In Christian terms, you could see Christianity as the finger, Christ as the moon. Focus entirely on Christianity, its doctrines and practices and such, and you miss seeing the moon that is Christ.

Christianity often extends a metaphorical finger as well.
